NuShield® for Venous Leg Ulcer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new treatment called NuShield® (a wound care product) to determine if it heals venous leg ulcers (VLUs) more effectively than standard care alone. Venous leg ulcers are open sores on the leg caused by poor blood flow. Participants will receive either NuShield® with standard treatment or just the standard treatment. The trial seeks individuals with a venous leg ulcer that hasn't healed in at least four weeks and affects daily life, such as causing discomfort or requiring regular bandaging. As an unphased trial, this study provides an opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance future treatment options for VLUs.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications. However, if you are on systemic steroids greater than 5 mg of Cortisone per day or certain immunosuppressive agents, you may not be eligible to participate.
What prior data suggests that NuShield® is safe for managing venous leg ulcers?
Previous studies have shown that NuShield® is well-tolerated by patients. Research indicates that its side effects are mild and manageable, with no strong evidence of serious negative effects linked to this treatment. This is not the first time NuShield® has been tested. The treatment has been evaluated for safety and effectiveness in treating non-healing venous leg ulcers (VLUs), yielding promising results. For those considering participation in a study with NuShield®, the safety information to date appears reassuring.12345
Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising?
NuShield® is unique because it combines a biological approach with the standard of care to treat venous leg ulcers. Unlike traditional treatments that often rely on compression therapy and wound dressings, NuShield® incorporates a natural extracellular matrix derived from porcine tissues. This innovative matrix supports the body's own healing process by providing a scaffold for new tissue growth, potentially accelerating wound closure and reducing healing time. Researchers are excited about NuShield® because it offers a new mechanism of action that could significantly improve outcomes for patients with chronic ulcers.
What evidence suggests that NuShield® might be an effective treatment for venous leg ulcers?
Studies have shown promising results for NuShield® in treating venous leg ulcers (VLUs). More than half of the wounds treated with similar methods healed within 12 weeks, and patients experienced a noticeable improvement in their quality of life. Another study found that the rate of wound healing increased from 33% at 8 weeks to 73% by 32 weeks. In this trial, participants will receive either NuShield® plus Standard of Care (SOC) or SOC alone. These findings suggest that NuShield® could help heal VLUs when used alongside standard care practices.12367

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults (18+) with a venous leg ulcer that has not healed for at least 4 weeks, fits within a certain size range, and is clearly caused by vein problems. If there are multiple ulcers, they must be at least 2 cm apart.Inclusion Criteria
