Nonlinear Microscopy for Prostate Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores a new method to help surgeons determine if they have removed all cancer during prostate surgery. It focuses on using a special microscope called nonlinear microscopy to examine tissue edges during the procedure. This process is known as Prostatectomy Intraoperative Surgical Margin Assessment With Non-linear Microscopy. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer and undergoing prostate removal surgery at BIDMC may qualify for this trial.
As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to innovative research that could enhance surgical outcomes for future patients.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What prior data suggests that nonlinear microscopy is safe for surgical margin assessment during prostatectomy?
Research has shown that using nonlinear microscopy (NLM) during prostate surgery is both feasible and effective for detecting cancerous tissue. One study found that NLM correctly identified cancerous areas in 7 out of 23 cases and non-cancerous areas in 10 cases. This demonstrates the technology's ability to accurately detect cancer presence during surgery.
Although these studies emphasize accuracy over safety, the use of NLM in standard surgeries suggests it is generally safe. Since this technology is applied in already approved surgeries, it likely maintains a similar safety level. No specific reports of problems caused by NLM have emerged, indicating it does not significantly increase surgical risk.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about using Nonlinear Microscopy (NLM) during prostatectomy surgeries because it offers a cutting-edge way to assess surgical margins in real-time. Unlike traditional methods that require sending tissue samples to a lab for analysis, NLM allows surgeons to see if they've removed all the cancerous tissue right during the operation. This could potentially reduce the need for follow-up surgeries and improve patient outcomes by ensuring more precise cancer removal.
What evidence suggests that nonlinear microscopy is effective for prostate cancer?
Research has shown that a technique called nonlinear microscopy (NLM), which participants in this trial will experience during their prostatectomy surgery, could significantly aid in identifying prostate cancer during surgery. Studies have found NLM to be highly accurate; one study showed it correctly identified cancerous tissue over 92% of the time. Another study found that NLM accurately detects both cancerous and non-cancerous tissue edges during surgery. The quick sample preparation time further suggests that NLM can be a valuable tool during prostate surgeries.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for men aged 18 or older with newly diagnosed, localized prostate cancer who are scheduled for a radical prostatectomy at BIDMC. People can't join if they can't give consent, have very large prostates, clear signs of advanced cancer on MRI, or language barriers.Inclusion Criteria
