What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to evaluate how effectively a smartphone app assists people with depression after discharge from a hospital's psychiatric unit. The app encourages users to engage in activities that bring joy and meaning, potentially reducing depression and anxiety. This approach, known as Behavioral Activation, focuses on increasing engagement in positive activities. Participants should be adults who have been hospitalized for mental health reasons and possess a smartphone with internet access. The study will monitor changes in mental health, such as depression and anxiety, and track the frequency of emergency or psychiatric service use. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance mental health support for others.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the study team or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this behavioral activation intervention is safe?

Research has shown that behavioral activation is generally safe for people with depression. In one study, only 2.8% of participants reported worsening depression, compared to 5.1% in another group receiving different care, suggesting that behavioral activation is well-tolerated. Another study found that 50% to 61% of participants experienced significant symptom improvement, indicating that many benefit from this treatment. The research supports behavioral activation as a safe option for managing depression.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Behavioral Activation for Depression because it uses a mobile app to engage patients in real-time skills practice after their hospital stay. Unlike traditional therapy sessions that occur weekly or biweekly, this approach offers continuous support and interaction, which can help reinforce positive behaviors more effectively. The app-based intervention builds on the therapy provided during inpatient care, allowing for a seamless transition and sustained improvement in managing depression symptoms.

What evidence suggests that behavioral activation is effective for depression?

Research has shown that behavioral activation is a promising treatment for depression. Studies have found that it improves symptoms in 50% to 61% of people with depression. In some cases, it works as well as antidepressant medication and reduces the chance of depression returning. One study found it even more effective than Sertraline, a common antidepressant, in reducing suicidal thoughts both short-term and long-term. Overall, behavioral activation helps by encouraging participation in enjoyable activities, boosting mood, and lessening depression. Participants in this trial will receive treatment as usual (TAU) combined with an ecological momentary intervention (EMI) via a mobile app, which supports skills practice related to behavioral activation after discharge.26789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

Trial Overview

The study tests if adding a behavioral activation smartphone app after hospital discharge helps patients practice mental health skills learned during group therapy. All participants get the group therapy; only those in the study use the app for 28 days post-discharge.
