What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a therapy called Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) to evaluate its effectiveness for anxiety and depression. The therapy consists of six online sessions, supplemented by additional online resources. It targets individuals in New York State who frequently experience worry, dwell on negative thoughts, or engage in self-criticism. Residents of New York with internet access who struggle with these feelings may find this trial suitable. As an unphased trial, it provides a unique opportunity to access innovative therapy and contribute to understanding its benefits.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial requires that if you are taking psychotropic medication, it must have been stable for at least 3 months before participating. If your medication hasn't been stable for that period, you may need to adjust it before joining.

What prior data suggests that Emotion Regulation Therapy is safe?

Research has shown that Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) is generally safe and well-received by patients. Studies have found that ERT reduces anxiety and depression symptoms without causing major side effects. For example, one study found that ERT improved emotional and behavioral management, with 93% of participants completing the treatment. Another study reported that patients felt much better after treatment, with no significant negative effects. These findings suggest ERT is a safe option for treating anxiety and depression.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Emotion Regulation Therapy is unique because it combines both synchronous telehealth sessions and an asynchronous online platform, offering a flexible and accessible approach to managing anxiety and depression. Unlike traditional treatments that often rely on medication or in-person therapy, this therapy leverages technology to deliver personalized care directly to individuals in their own environments. Researchers are excited about this therapy because it not only enhances accessibility but also integrates real-time support with self-paced learning, potentially offering more comprehensive and sustainable mental health benefits.

What evidence suggests that Emotion Regulation Therapy might be an effective treatment for anxiety and depression?

Research has shown that Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) effectively reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. A large study with over 11,000 participants found that treatments like ERT significantly lowered levels of anxiety and depression. Another study discovered that ERT helps people manage their emotions better, reducing the severity of these conditions. Additionally, a review of several studies reported that ERT led to greater improvements in depression, anxiety, and quality of life, with lasting benefits. These findings suggest that ERT has strong potential to help those struggling with anxiety and depression.678910
