What is the purpose of this trial?

The goal of this study is to assess the effect of an educational intervention for primary care providers (PCPs) on influenza and COVID-19 vaccine uptake among their adult patients through a pragmatic, cluster randomized trial in primary care clinics.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults visiting certain primary care clinics during the 2026/2027 flu or COVID-19 vaccine seasons. Patients must not have already received that season's vaccine and, for COVID-19, must be at higher risk (like age 65+). Providers in the study are licensed clinicians working at these clinics.

Inclusion Criteria

I am 19 years old or older.
Patient participants for COVID-19 vaccine must have a qualifying clinic visit with a study PCP at one of the study clinics during the 2026/2027 COVID-19 vaccine season
Primary care provider participants must be practicing primary care providers at study clinic during the study period

Exclusion Criteria

Primary care provider participants who are members of the investigational team or part of the intervention at participating clinic sites
Primary care provider participants who practice at more than one study clinic assigned to discordant study arms (e.g., control and intervention)
Patient participants who are residents of states that do not share immunization data with the Massachusetts Immunization Information System (MIIS)

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Intervention

Primary care providers receive educational intervention on communication strategies for vaccine uptake

4-6 weeks

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for vaccine uptake within one month of the end of the study period

1 month

  • Provider communication training

Trial Overview

The study tests whether training primary care providers on how to talk with patients about vaccines increases adult vaccination rates for flu and COVID-19. Clinics are randomly assigned to either receive this communication training or continue usual practice.
