What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if an Intuitive Eating program is effective and well-received by pregnant women with obesity. It will compare the experiences of participants in an 8-week Intuitive Eating program with those who do not participate, focusing on weight gain, eating behaviors, and body image. The trial seeks pregnant women diagnosed with obesity, who are between 12 and 22 weeks along, and receive prenatal care at UC San Diego Health. Participants must have internet access and a device like a smartphone or computer. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding how intuitive eating can benefit pregnant women with obesity.

What prior data suggests that the Intuitive Eating Intervention is safe for pregnant women with obesity?

Research has shown that the Intuitive Eating (IE) program is generally safe and easy to follow. In a study with 50 women, participants who completed the sessions experienced long-term benefits, such as reduced concern about weight and body shape and more relaxed eating habits. These studies reported no major negative effects related to the IE program.

Additionally, IE is linked to healthier eating habits and better mental health. The program encourages attention to the body's hunger signals instead of strict diets, which may explain its safety.

While this trial does not involve testing a new drug, the information suggests participants can expect a safe experience. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider about any new program, especially for pregnant women.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Intuitive Eating Intervention because it offers a fresh approach to managing pregnancy-related obesity by focusing on listening to the body's hunger and fullness cues, rather than following strict diet plans. Unlike traditional methods that often emphasize calorie counting or meal replacements, this intervention encourages a healthier relationship with food through self-guided learning and reflection, using a workbook and online modules. Additionally, participants have access to certified counselors, adding a supportive and personalized element to the program. This unique approach aims to promote long-term, sustainable habits rather than temporary fixes, which could lead to more effective weight management during pregnancy.

What evidence suggests that the Intuitive Eating Intervention could be effective for pregnancy and obesity?

Research has shown that intuitive eating can help manage weight gain during pregnancy. One study found that women who practiced intuitive eating gained less weight. Intuitive eating involves paying attention to the body's hunger and fullness signals, promoting healthier eating habits. Another study found that intuitive eating reduced concerns about weight and body shape, leading to greater life satisfaction. In this trial, participants in the Intuitive Eating Intervention Group will engage in intuitive eating practices, which might support healthier pregnancies for women with obesity.12367

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for pregnant women who have obesity. Participants should be willing to take part in an online program during pregnancy and postpartum. The study aims to see if the program is practical and helpful for this group.
