What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether dry needling can boost quadriceps strength and improve recovery after ACL reconstruction using a quadriceps tendon autograft. Physical therapists perform dry needling by inserting thin needles into muscles to reduce pain and improve function. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will receive both dry needling and regular physical therapy, while the other will receive only physical therapy. The study seeks participants who have undergone ACL reconstruction with a quadriceps autograft within the last six weeks and experience issues with quadriceps strength.

As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the chance to contribute to understanding innovative recovery techniques.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that dry needling is safe for pediatric ACL reconstruction recovery?

Studies have shown that dry needling is generally safe and well-tolerated. Research indicates that it can help reduce pain and improve knee movement after ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery. Patients report handling the procedure well, with few serious side effects. Most side effects are mild, such as temporary soreness or bruising.

A recent study included dry needling in a rehabilitation program after ACL surgery, and it helped with muscle strength and recovery. This suggests that dry needling is both effective and safe for recovery.

While every medical procedure carries some risk, current research supports the safety of dry needling for those recovering from ACL surgery.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about dry needling for ACL reconstruction recovery because it offers a unique approach to enhancing muscle strength post-surgery. Unlike typical rehabilitation methods that rely on physical therapy exercises to gradually rebuild strength, dry needling directly targets the quadriceps muscle. This technique involves inserting thin needles into specific muscle areas to alleviate tension and promote healing, potentially leading to faster strength gains. By focusing on the precise activation and relaxation of muscle fibers, dry needling might accelerate recovery time and improve outcomes for patients compared to standard rehabilitation practices.

What evidence suggests that dry needling is effective for ACL reconstruction recovery?

This trial will compare the effects of dry needling with no intervention for ACL reconstruction recovery. Studies have shown that dry needling can reduce pain and improve muscle function after ACL surgery. Research indicates that applying dry needling to the quadriceps muscles may enhance their performance, which is crucial for knee stability. In one study, patients reported less pain and increased strength when dry needling was part of their therapy. Additionally, dry needling has reduced muscle tightness and knots, aiding in strength recovery. Although data on children is limited, early findings suggest they tolerate the treatment well and experience benefits similar to adults.24678

I am between 10 and 20 years old.
English and/or Spanish speaking

Exclusion Criteria

Current pregnancy
I have had complications like infection after surgery.
I have had surgery on my knee or hip on the leg being tested.

Trial Overview

The study compares two groups: one receives both dry needling and standard physical therapy, while the other gets only physical therapy. The goal is to see if adding dry needling helps improve thigh muscle strength after ACL surgery.
