What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether real-time ultrasound images can help individuals with shoulder pain better activate two key muscles, the serratus anterior and lower trapezius, compared to standard clinician feedback. The goal is to determine if this training improves shoulder movement and reduces pain during daily activities. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will train with Dynamic Ultrasound Visual Feedback, while the other will receive standard verbal and tactile feedback. Individuals with shoulder pain affecting daily activities, yet still able to raise their arm above shoulder height, might be suitable for this trial. If ultrasound feedback proves effective, it could provide therapists with a new method to help patients manage shoulder pain. As an unphased trial, this study presents a unique opportunity to explore innovative therapy methods that could enhance the recovery experience.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the study team or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that using ultrasound feedback for shoulder pain is safe?

Research has shown that dynamic ultrasound feedback for shoulder pain is generally safe and well-tolerated. Studies on ultrasound-guided shoulder treatments consistently find these methods safe. They improve movement and reduce pain without causing significant side effects. One study found that using ultrasound during shoulder exercises helps retrain patients without negative effects. This suggests that real-time ultrasound images guiding shoulder exercises are safe for participants, with no major safety concerns reported.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Most treatments for shoulder pain involve physical therapy exercises with verbal and tactile feedback from a therapist. However, researchers are excited about using dynamic ultrasound visual feedback as an innovative approach. This method provides real-time imaging of shoulder movements, allowing patients to see how their muscles and joints are working during exercises. This visual insight can enhance understanding and execution of exercises, potentially improving outcomes more effectively than traditional feedback alone.

What evidence suggests that using ultrasound feedback is effective for shoulder pain?

Research has shown that ultrasound imaging can significantly improve the accuracy of shoulder treatments, with studies indicating accuracy rates between 90% and 100%. For individuals with shoulder pain, ultrasound guidance has enhanced pain relief and shoulder function, with reports of pain decreasing and shoulder movement improving by over 30%. In this trial, participants will receive either standardized exercise feedback or standardized exercise feedback with dynamic ultrasound feedback. Dynamic ultrasound is particularly useful because it provides live images, offering a convenient and affordable way to understand shoulder mechanics. This feedback helps patients engage key shoulder muscles more effectively, which can improve movement and potentially reduce pain.16789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for people with pain at the top of their shoulder (pain score above 2), who can lift their arm above 140°, and can do all study activities. People can't join if they have severe pain (above 6), nerve disorders, past major shoulder injuries or surgery, frozen shoulder, neck-related pain only, or prior treatment for certain shoulder muscles.

Inclusion Criteria

I have pain at the top of my shoulder.
My pain level is higher than 2 on a 0-10 scale.
I can lift my arm above shoulder height.

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Treatment

Participants perform shoulder exercises with either ultrasound feedback or standard feedback to improve muscle activation

1 day
1 visit (in-person)

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for muscle activity and subacromial space size immediately after treatment

1 day
1 visit (in-person)

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

  • Dynamic Ultrasound Visual Feedback

Trial Overview

The study compares two ways to help activate key shoulder muscles during exercise: one group gets real-time ultrasound feedback showing muscle movement; the other receives standard verbal and touch-based feedback from a clinician. Participants are randomly assigned to each group.
