Lifitegrast for Dry Eye
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial examines how Lifitegrast, an eye drop, affects proteins in the tears of people with dry eye disease. It aims to determine if Lifitegrast alters specific markers that provide insights into the condition and its treatment. Ideal participants have experienced dry eyes for at least six months and are currently using Xiidra® drops. As a Phase 4 trial, this research seeks to understand how this FDA-approved and effective treatment benefits more patients.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but you cannot use any eye drops other than Lifitegrast within 2 hours of tear fluid collection. It's best to discuss your specific medications with the trial team.
What is the safety track record for Lifitegrast?
Research has shown that Lifitegrast, available as Xiidra® eye drops, is safe to use. Studies have found that most patients tolerate it well, experiencing only minor side effects. For over seven years, people worldwide have used this treatment without any new safety issues. Serious side effects are rare, and very few people discontinue its use because of them. This evidence suggests that Lifitegrast is a safe choice for treating dry eye disease.12345
Why are researchers enthusiastic about this study treatment?
Most treatments for dry eye disease focus on providing lubrication or reducing inflammation. But Lifitegrast, marketed as Xiidra®, works differently by specifically targeting and blocking the interaction of proteins that contribute to inflammation in the eye, which is a key cause of dry eye symptoms. This unique mechanism of action allows Lifitegrast to directly address the inflammation process, potentially offering faster relief and improvement for patients compared to traditional methods. Researchers are excited about Lifitegrast because its targeted approach could lead to more effective and timely symptom management for those struggling with dry eye disease.
What is the effectiveness track record for Lifitegrast in treating dry eye?
Research has shown that Lifitegrast, marketed as Xiidra, effectively treats dry eye disease (DED). In this trial, subjects with DED will receive Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5.0%). Studies found that after 12 weeks of using Xiidra, patients experienced significant improvement in both the signs and symptoms of DED. Eye dryness and discomfort scores improved by over 60 points on a 100-point scale. Additionally, about two-thirds of patients reported feeling almost or completely better within 1 to 3 months. These results suggest that Lifitegrast can quickly and effectively relieve dry eyes.678910
