Imetelstat for Blood Cancers
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a drug called imetelstat to determine its effectiveness in managing certain blood cancers known as MDS/MPNs. These conditions involve abnormal blood cell production and can cause symptoms such as frequent fatigue, low red blood cell counts, or an enlarged spleen. Participants suitable for the trial have been diagnosed with MDS/MPNs and have not responded well to other treatments like hydroxyurea or azacitidine. The trial aims to understand how effectively imetelstat controls these blood cancer symptoms. As a Phase 2 trial, the research measures the treatment's effectiveness in an initial, smaller group of people.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications. However, you cannot be on other investigational agents or certain cancer treatments within 7 days of starting the trial.
Is there any evidence suggesting that imetelstat is likely to be safe for humans?
Previous studies have shown that imetelstat has a manageable safety profile. Research indicates that common side effects include low white blood cell counts (neutropenia), low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), and low red blood cell counts (anemia). Many patients reported these side effects, but they can generally be managed.
In one study, about 68% of patients experienced severe neutropenia, and 62% had severe thrombocytopenia. Although these numbers might seem concerning, they are similar to those of other treatments for related conditions and are usually monitored closely by healthcare providers.
Imetelstat is already approved for certain patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) who did not respond to other treatments. This approval suggests that the treatment is considered safe enough for use in this setting, although side effects still require management. Doctors will closely monitor patients for any adverse effects during the trial.12345Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising for blood cancers?
Imetelstat is unique because it targets a specific enzyme called telomerase, which is crucial for the survival of cancer cells. Unlike traditional treatments for blood cancers, such as chemotherapy and targeted therapies, which often have a broad approach, imetelstat zeroes in on this enzyme to potentially halt the growth of cancer cells. Researchers are excited about imetelstat because it offers a novel mechanism of action that could lead to more effective outcomes with potentially fewer side effects.
What evidence suggests that imetelstat might be an effective treatment for blood cancers?
Research has shown that imetelstat can be beneficial for certain blood cancers, such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). In earlier studies, about 39.8% of patients avoided red blood cell transfusions for at least eight weeks, with some going without transfusions for 24 weeks or more. Another study found that 21% of patients with myelofibrosis (MF), another blood cancer, experienced a reduction in symptoms. These findings suggest that imetelstat may help manage and improve blood-related conditions. Participants in this trial will receive imetelstat treatment administered intravenously every four weeks.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults (18+) with certain blood cancers called MDS/MPN, including those who have tried other treatments like hydroxyurea or growth factors. Participants need to have adequate liver and kidney function and specific blood test results. People with severe organ failure cannot join.Inclusion Criteria

Trial Overview
The study is testing imetelstat, a drug that blocks telomerase, to see if it can help control myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPNs). All participants will receive this medication in a phase 2 clinical trial.
