Menthol Cigarettes for Nicotine Addiction
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores how menthol cigarettes affect nicotine addiction compared to non-menthol cigarettes. Researchers aim to understand differences in nicotine delivery, smoking habits, and personal experiences with both types of cigarettes. Participants will try different study cigarettes during lab sessions and discuss their feelings about each type. The trial seeks individuals who have smoked menthol cigarettes daily for at least six months and are willing to temporarily stop using other nicotine or cannabis products. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding the effects of menthol cigarettes on addiction.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, you must abstain from all nicotine, tobacco, and smoked cannabis products for about 12 hours before each study visit.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research has shown that menthol cigarettes can seriously affect health. Studies have found that people who smoke menthol cigarettes may experience stronger withdrawal and addiction symptoms than those who smoke regular cigarettes. Evidence also links menthol cigarettes to a higher risk of death from any cause and heart-related diseases compared to non-menthol cigarettes.
The menthol flavor appears to increase nicotine's addictiveness, making it harder for people to quit smoking menthol cigarettes. These findings suggest that menthol cigarettes may pose significant health risks and are not suitable for long-term use. Consider these factors carefully when deciding to join a study involving menthol cigarettes.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatments?
Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores how different types of menthol cigarettes impact nicotine addiction. Unlike typical nicotine replacement therapies like patches or gums, this study examines the unique subjective effects and economic behaviors related to smoking different menthol cigarettes. By analyzing puff patterns and nicotine levels in the blood after smoking Study Cigarettes A, B, and C, researchers aim to uncover insights into consumer behavior and addiction. This could lead to a better understanding of how specific cigarette characteristics influence addiction, potentially informing future smoking cessation strategies.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for nicotine addiction?
This trial will compare the effects of different menthol cigarettes on nicotine addiction. Studies have shown that menthol cigarettes can influence smoking behavior and nicotine addiction. Research indicates that people who smoke menthol cigarettes often find it harder to quit than those who smoke regular cigarettes. Evidence suggests that menthol increases nicotine's effects, making cigarettes more addictive. Some studies found that menthol smokers are about 12% less likely to quit successfully. Additionally, menthol users might take longer to make progress in quitting, especially in the first few weeks. This suggests that menthol cigarettes could pose more challenges for those trying to reduce nicotine addiction. Participants in this trial will be exposed to different menthol cigarette formulations to assess their impact on smoking behavior and addiction.26789

- Impact of Novel vs. Usual Brand Menthol Cigarettes
Trial Overview
The study compares the effects and addictive potential of usual brand menthol cigarettes versus novel menthol cigarette variants. Participants try both types in lab sessions and real-world settings using surveys, behavioral tasks, and biospecimen collection. The design is randomized, double-blind, and crossover.

Experimental Treatment
Participants smoke one Study Cigarette C during one Phase 2 laboratory session (10 puffs over 5 minutes), with puff topography and serial plasma nicotine sampling. Subjective effects, the Cigarette Purchase Task, and the Cross-Price Elasticity Task are completed during the session. Order of exposure to Study Cigarettes A, B, and C is randomized.
Participants smoke one Study Cigarette B during one Phase 2 laboratory session (10 puffs over 5 minutes), with puff topography and serial plasma nicotine sampling. Subjective effects, the Cigarette Purchase Task, and the Cross-Price Elasticity Task are completed during the session. Order of exposure to Study Cigarettes A, B, and C is randomized.
