Health and Wellness Coaching for Thyroid Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether health and wellness coaching (HWC) can assist individuals with certain types of thyroid cancer in adhering to their treatment plans and leading healthier lives. Thyroid cancer treatment often proves challenging, causing fatigue, mood changes, and other issues that disrupt daily life. HWC might motivate patients to set and achieve health-related goals, potentially improving self-care and overall health outcomes. Suitable participants have papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, have undergone thyroid removal, and take only levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone replacement). Participants must speak English and provide consent to join. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to explore innovative support methods that could enhance quality of life.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial requires participants to be on levothyroxine only, without other thyroid medications like triiodothyronine (T3) or desiccated thyroid products. If you are taking other thyroid medications, you may need to switch to levothyroxine.
What prior data suggests that health and wellness coaching is safe for thyroid cancer patients?
Research shows that Health and Wellness Coaching (HWC) might be safe and helpful for individuals with long-term health issues. Studies have found that HWC can assist people in adhering to their treatment plans and adopting healthy lifestyle changes. Although specific information on HWC's safety for thyroid cancer patients is not yet available, research in other health areas suggests it is generally safe and does not cause harm. Therefore, HWC could also be a safe option for thyroid cancer patients.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about Health and Wellness Coaching (HWC) for thyroid cancer because it offers a holistic approach that current medical treatments, like surgery, radioactive iodine, and hormone therapy, don't address. HWC focuses on supporting the emotional and lifestyle needs of patients, which can improve overall well-being and potentially enhance recovery. Unlike standard treatments that target the cancer itself, HWC empowers patients by providing personalized guidance and support, helping them to manage their health more proactively and reduce stress. This approach could lead to better patient outcomes by complementing existing medical treatments with strategies for living healthier lives.
What evidence suggests that health and wellness coaching is effective for thyroid cancer?
Studies have shown that Health and Wellness Coaching (HWC) can enhance quality of life and mood, particularly for cancer survivors. Research indicates that HWC helps individuals set health goals, leading to improved self-care and adherence to treatment plans. In many cases, HWC has increased physical activity and promoted healthier eating. Most studies have found positive outcomes in areas such as body weight and overall health. In this trial, participants will receive HWC as supportive care. Although researchers are still studying its specific effects on thyroid cancer patients, its benefits for other long-term health issues suggest it could be helpful.23467
