Jaspr for Suicide Prevention
(ASSIST Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a mobile app called Jaspr, designed to reduce suicide risk by teaching skills to manage emotions and lessen feelings of isolation. It compares using the app alone to using it with additional support, such as motivational prompts. The study seeks students at UMass Amherst or the University of Wisconsin Madison who have recently experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors and own a mobile device. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could improve mental health support for students.
Do I need to stop my current medications to join the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on using a mobile app for support, so you may not need to change your medication routine.
What prior data suggests that the Jaspr application is safe for use in suicide prevention?
Research shows that Jaspr and Jaspr+ are digital tools designed to assist individuals with suicidal thoughts, using scientifically proven methods. Jaspr is already implemented in settings like emergency rooms to support those at risk of suicide.
Studies have found that these apps enhance the delivery of suicide prevention strategies, improving patient experiences and providing safe support. No serious problems have been reported from using these apps. Jaspr+ includes motivational coaching to further engage users, and like Jaspr, it has no reported safety issues.
Both tools focus on creating safety plans and offering counseling to help reduce risks and improve mood. Most users find these platforms easy to use without major issues.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about Jaspr for suicide prevention because it integrates digital tools with personalized mental health strategies. Unlike traditional therapies that often rely solely on face-to-face counseling, Jaspr offers a mobile app-based platform for safety planning and lethal means counseling, making these resources more accessible anytime, anywhere. Additionally, the Jaspr+ arm enhances this approach using motivational interviewing principles, reminding users of their personalized goals, which can boost engagement and adherence. This innovative use of technology aims to complement existing treatments by providing continuous support beyond the clinical setting.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for suicide prevention?
Research has shown that the Jaspr app, a treatment in this trial, is designed to assist individuals with suicidal thoughts by providing proven skills. Studies have found that apps like Jaspr can lower suicide risk by offering tools such as safety planning and advice on reducing access to dangerous items. Early results suggest these digital tools can enhance emotional well-being by providing distractions and guidance to combat negative feelings. In this trial, participants in the Jaspr+ arm will use an enhanced version of the app, which builds on the basic app by employing motivational techniques to remind users of their personal goals and encourage regular use. While more research is needed to confirm long-term benefits, these tools have shown promise in emergency situations for supporting those at risk.12345
