What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether virtual peer recovery coaching can help incarcerated adults with drug addiction engage more effectively in treatment. The researchers aim to determine if connecting with a peer coach through video calls can improve outcomes such as reduced drug use and fewer overdoses. Participants will receive either the standard support offered in jail or the new virtual coaching. This trial suits English-speaking inmates who have experienced significant drug-related issues and can provide contact numbers for follow-up. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative approaches in addiction recovery.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the study staff or your healthcare provider.

What prior data suggests that the virtual peer recovery coaching intervention is safe?

Studies have shown that peer recovery coaching (PRC) is generally safe and well-tolerated. Research indicates that people receiving peer recovery support often experience positive outcomes, such as fewer hospital visits and increased involvement with recovery resources. This suggests that the program is both effective and safe for participants.

Connecting with a recovery coach through technology, similar to the virtual format in this trial, has proven practical and helpful. Digital peer recovery coaching is easy to use and safe. Participants in previous studies received support without major negative effects.

In summary, evidence shows that virtual peer recovery coaching is a safe way to help people engage in substance use disorder treatment.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Virtual Peer Recovery Coaching is unique because it offers a personalized, one-on-one support system through trained peer recovery coaches using a secure telehealth platform. Unlike the standard of care, which typically involves general community resource information without personal coaching, this approach emphasizes motivational interviewing and individualized recovery plans. Researchers are excited about this method because it allows for continuous, tailored support that can connect participants to various resources like medications for opioid use disorder and harm reduction services, which might improve engagement and outcomes in addiction recovery.

What evidence suggests that virtual peer recovery coaching is effective for drug addiction?

This trial will compare Virtual Peer Recovery Coaching with the standard of care for drug addiction support. Studies have shown that peer recovery coaching can assist people with substance use disorders in various ways. Research indicates that those receiving this support often reduce substance use and experience fewer relapses. For example, one study found that peer recovery coaching after rehab significantly reduced relapse rates. Additionally, these services have been linked to better treatment participation and improved outcomes, especially in rural areas. While research is ongoing, promising evidence suggests that peer recovery coaching can help those struggling with addiction by connecting them to recovery resources and providing ongoing support.12678
