What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if altering perceptions of how others view mental health can encourage more Black and Asian young adults with untreated depression and suicidal thoughts to seek help. Participants will receive Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF), which provides information about others' actual views on mental health treatment, potentially reducing stigma. The study will compare this approach to a control group that learns about a different topic. It is ideal for Black and Asian American adults aged 18-29 who have depression and suicidal thoughts but aren't currently receiving treatment. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding mental health perceptions and stigma reduction in diverse communities.

What prior data suggests that this Personalized Normative Feedback is safe?

Research has shown that Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) has been used in many studies, particularly to address issues like alcohol use. These studies found that participants generally receive PNF well. For instance, PNF effectively reduces risky behaviors without causing major side effects. This indicates that PNF is a safe method to correct misunderstandings and promote healthier habits. Although specific side effects are rarely reported, using PNF in similar situations has not raised major safety concerns.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) is unique because it focuses on changing perceptions of social norms related to seeking mental health treatment. Unlike traditional approaches that might involve therapy or medication, PNF provides individuals with data about how others view mental health help-seeking, potentially reducing stigma and encouraging more people to seek help. Researchers are excited because this method targets social attitudes directly, which could lead to increased treatment engagement and better mental health outcomes.

What evidence suggests that Personalized Normative Feedback is effective for increasing help-seeking behavior in untreated depression and suicidal thoughts?

Research has shown that Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF), which participants in this trial may receive, helps people change behavior by clarifying peer perceptions. This approach can reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking. One study found that online PNF reduced stigma and increased willingness to seek help among participants. Another study demonstrated that PNF effectively reduced risky behaviors, such as excessive drinking, by correcting misconceptions about peer actions. Overall, PNF appears promising for encouraging help-seeking behavior by altering perceptions of social norms.678910

Trial Overview

The study compares two approaches: one group receives personalized feedback correcting misperceptions about others' views on mental health (PNF), while the other gets general information (attention control). The goal is to see if PNF increases willingness to seek help.
