What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new method to improve lung health for people living with HIV. It aims to prevent pneumonia through a pharmacist-led e-consult system that suggests changes such as quitting smoking, getting necessary vaccines, and adjusting certain medications. The trial will examine how often doctors implement these suggestions over time. Individuals with HIV who are on antiretroviral therapy and either smoke or have used inhaled corticosteroids or proton-pump inhibitors for more than 90 days may qualify for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative healthcare solutions that could enhance lung health and overall well-being.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial may involve changes to your current medications, especially if you are using inhaled corticosteroids or proton-pump inhibitors. Pharmacists will review your medications and may recommend adjustments, but your healthcare provider will decide if any changes are needed.

What prior data suggests that this pharmacist-led E-consult intervention is safe for people with HIV?

Research has shown that pharmacist-led online consultations are generally safe and well-received. During these consultations, pharmacists review medical records and provide advice on medications, including those for quitting smoking or adjusting prescriptions.

One study found that pharmacist-led care led to positive outcomes, such as fewer hospital readmissions and safer medication use. Another study demonstrated that these efforts help patients with long-term conditions take their medications correctly and safely.

In summary, pharmacist-led online consultations are a safe method with no major safety issues reported. They improve treatment management and are appreciated by patients.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about pharmacist-led proactive e-consults for people with HIV because this approach offers personalized medication optimization that is not typically available in standard care. Unlike traditional treatments, which may rely on routine provider visits and standard medication regimens, this method involves pharmacists actively reviewing patient cases and providing tailored recommendations before medical appointments. This proactive strategy aims to enhance lung health by addressing individual medication needs more effectively, potentially leading to better overall health outcomes for HIV+ patients.

What evidence suggests that this pharmacist-led E-consult intervention is effective for improving lung health in people with HIV?

Research has shown that pharmacist-led online consultations can improve lung health care for people with HIV. In this trial, participants in the proactive E-consult arm will receive pharmacist recommendations sent to their providers before appointments. Studies have found that these consultations help lower the risk of pneumonia by addressing factors like smoking, vaccinations, and medication management. For instance, these proactive online consultations have successfully improved care for lung conditions like COPD (a disease that makes breathing difficult) in people with HIV. By reviewing health records and suggesting personalized actions, pharmacists can help reduce pneumonia risks and improve long-term lung health. These findings suggest that such interventions could effectively manage lung issues in people with HIV.12678
