What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine how different types of social support combined with exercise can benefit older men who have survived prostate cancer. It compares three exercise programs: one includes social interaction before workouts, another lacks the extra social time, and the third is done at home alone. The trial examines how these programs impact feelings of loneliness related to cancer, as well as mental and physical health over six months. Men who completed prostate cancer treatment more than three months ago, feel lonely due to cancer, and can walk independently may be suitable candidates.

As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore how social support can enhance recovery and well-being after cancer treatment.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, if you are on medication that affects movement or is not safe with exercise, you may not be eligible to participate.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Research has shown that exercise programs, like those in this trial, are generally safe and well-tolerated by older men with prostate cancer. In past studies, participants in socially-enhanced exercise programs did not report major negative effects. Instead, these programs often led to positive outcomes, such as increased physical activity and improved mental health.

For example, one study with prostate cancer survivors found that participants increased their daily steps, indicating they could safely become more active. Another study demonstrated that supervised exercise is linked to a better quality of life and well-being in cancer patients, with few negative side effects.

Overall, the evidence supports that these exercise programs provide a safe way to improve health for prostate cancer survivors.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores the impact of adding a social component to exercise routines for prostate cancer patients. Unlike standard exercise routines or physiotherapy, the "Socially Enhanced Exercise Program" includes a social element by incorporating a 15-minute social period before workouts, which might enhance motivation and adherence. This trial aims to determine if the added social interaction can improve physical and mental well-being more effectively than traditional exercise alone. By comparing supervised group exercise, socially enhanced exercise, and independent exercise, researchers hope to discover the role social interaction plays in enhancing the benefits of exercise for prostate cancer patients.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for prostate cancer?

Research has shown that exercise programs can greatly improve the physical health of prostate cancer patients. A review of studies found that exercise helps reduce body fat and build muscle strength. This trial will compare different exercise approaches: Arm I involves socially enhanced supervised group exercise, which includes pre-exercise social time and links to better quality of life and improved physical abilities. Arm II focuses on supervised group exercise without the social component, while Arm III involves unsupervised independent exercise at home. Home-based exercise programs offer similar benefits, with some research indicating they can be just as effective as group activities while using fewer resources. Overall, regular exercise, whether done at home or in a group, associates with less fatigue and better health in prostate cancer survivors.14678
