Web-Based Education for Knee Pain
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a 6-week web-based education program, MyKneeCap.com, designed to help runners manage knee pain, specifically patellofemoral pain, often called "runner's knee." The researchers aim to determine if the program improves pain, function, and marathon performance for runners in the 2026 Boston Marathon. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will use the program before the marathon, and the other will access it afterward. This study suits runners who have experienced knee pain for at least three months, especially during activities like sitting, kneeling, or running, and have access to an internet device. As an unphased trial, it offers runners a unique opportunity to explore innovative solutions for knee pain management.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to consult with the trial coordinators or your doctor for guidance.
What prior data suggests that this web-based education program is safe for runners?
Research has shown that online educational programs can safely and effectively help manage knee pain. One study found that internet-based exercises reduced knee pain and increased physical activity in patients. Another study demonstrated that a digital program for chronic knee pain, including osteoarthritis, significantly improved knee function and reduced pain. These results suggest that web-based platforms like MyKneeCap.com are generally well-received, with few reports of negative effects. Participants in those studies did not report major issues, indicating that these programs are safe for managing knee pain.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about MyKneeCap.com because it offers a unique, web-based educational approach to managing knee pain specifically for runners. Unlike traditional treatments like physical therapy, medication, or surgery, this platform provides users with evidence-based information on both physical and non-physical factors contributing to patellofemoral pain. It empowers runners with self-management strategies tailored to their needs, potentially reducing reliance on more invasive treatments. This easily accessible, preemptive education could help runners manage symptoms more effectively, especially in preparation for events like marathons.
What evidence suggests that this web-based education program is effective for knee pain?
Research has shown that learning about and managing one's condition can help reduce patellofemoral pain, often called runner's knee. In this trial, participants in the Pre-Marathon Education arm will access MyKneeCap.com, a web-based platform offering simple treatments that have reduced pain by about 1.44 points on a pain scale after 4–6 weeks. These treatments teach individuals to understand and manage their symptoms, aiding both pain relief and movement. The online program addresses both physical and non-physical causes of knee pain, equipping runners with the knowledge to better handle their condition. Participants in the Wait-and-See Control arm will access the platform after completing the marathon.16789

Experimental Treatment
This group will serve as a wait-and-see control (no intervention) prior to the 2026 Boston Marathon. After completing the marathon, participants will receive access to MyKneeCap.com, a web-based platform designed to provide runners with evidence-based education on the physical and non-physical factors contributing to patellofemoral pain, as well as strategies for self-managing symptoms tailored specifically for runners.
