What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to test whether radiofrequency ablation, a technique using heat to destroy tissue, can help manage recurrent parathyroid cancer by reducing high calcium levels in the blood. It targets individuals who have previously had parathyroid cancer removed but now show visible signs of recurrence in the neck. Suitable candidates for this study include those who cannot or do not want surgery, have persistent high calcium levels, and have a visible neck lump not too close to major nerves or blood vessels. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative treatment options for managing recurrent parathyroid cancer.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial requires that you stop taking Cinacalcet before participating. Other medications are not specified, so it's best to discuss with the trial team.

What prior data suggests that radiofrequency ablation is safe for treating parathyroid cancer?

Research shows that radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is generally safe for treating parathyroid issues. Studies have found a low complication rate of about 2.1% when RFA is used for non-cancerous thyroid nodules, with most complications involving rare nerve injuries.

For conditions similar to parathyroid cancer, such as primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), RFA has proven effective and well-tolerated. Research indicates that RFA helps restore normal hormone levels in many patients, achieving success rates up to 90%.

Additionally, RFA might be a safe option for those who cannot or do not want surgery. Often performed as an outpatient procedure, patients can typically go home the same day. Overall, RFA appears to be a promising and safe choice for managing parathyroid problems.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for parathyroid cancer is unique because it uses heat generated by radio waves to target and destroy cancerous tissue. Unlike traditional surgical options, which can be invasive and require longer recovery times, RFA is minimally invasive and typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing for a quicker recovery. Researchers are excited about RFA because it offers a precise, less disruptive treatment option that could improve quality of life by reducing the need for extensive surgery and its associated risks.

What evidence suggests that radiofrequency ablation is effective for parathyroid cancer?

Research has shown that radiofrequency ablation (RFA), the treatment under study in this trial, effectively treats conditions related to the parathyroid glands. Studies have found that RFA can significantly lower high calcium levels in the blood, a common issue in parathyroid cancer. In patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), RFA led to complete remission in up to 86.7% of cases after one year. Another study reported a 93.55% complete response rate, with a reduction in the size of the treated area. Overall, RFA offers a promising alternative to surgery for individuals with parathyroid conditions who cannot or do not wish to undergo surgery.34678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults with recurrent parathyroid cancer in the neck, confirmed by previous surgery, who have high calcium levels that can't be controlled. Participants must not be able to have more surgery or choose not to. They need to be healthy enough for local anesthesia and meet certain blood test requirements.

Inclusion Criteria

I am healthy enough for procedures with local anesthesia or sedation.
Patients with distant oligometastasis visible on ultrasound
Selected nodule visible on ultrasound without significant extension posterior to trachea or mediastinal component

Exclusion Criteria

Patients with calcified nodules
My nodule is mostly cystic, with less than 70% solid parts.
Patients with contralateral vocal cord paralysis
