What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) can improve cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in the brain. CSF maintains brain health by delivering nutrients, removing waste, and regulating pressure. Participants will undergo MRI scans before and after a 30-minute OMT session to detect any changes in CSF flow. The trial seeks healthy adults who can undergo MRI scans and participate in OMT. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance brain health.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

If you are taking medications that affect cerebrospinal fluid flow or production, you will need to stop taking them to participate in the trial.

What prior data suggests that Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment is safe for affecting CSF flow?

Research has shown that Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is generally safe. Studies have found no serious side effects linked to OMT, and mild side effects are rare, occurring about as often as in groups not receiving OMT. This suggests that most people tolerate OMT well. The treatment involves hands-on techniques used by osteopathic doctors to improve body function, potentially aiding in processes like clearing waste from the brain. Prospective trial participants should discuss any concerns with the research team.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is unique because it specifically targets the body's musculoskeletal system to potentially enhance cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. Unlike standard treatments that might involve medication or surgery, OMT uses hands-on techniques, such as osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine and myofascial release, to address somatic dysfunctions. Researchers are excited about this approach because it could offer a non-invasive method to improve CSF dynamics and glymphatic function, potentially leading to better brain health outcomes without the side effects associated with traditional interventions.

What evidence suggests that Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment is effective for CSF flow?

Research has shown that Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) can improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid surrounding the brain and spine. Studies suggest that OMT may reduce pain and enhance quality of life by improving fluid movement and lowering brain pressure. One study found that OMT altered blood flow in the brain, which is crucial for brain health. Research on patients with traumatic brain injuries demonstrated that OMT significantly improved CSF drainage. These findings suggest that OMT might support brain health by affecting CSF movement. Participants in this trial will undergo OMT to assess changes in CSF flow dynamics and glymphatic-related imaging measures.12678

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

Trial Overview

The study tests whether a single session of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) changes the flow of spinal fluid in the brain, using MRI scans before and after treatment. It also looks at how factors like age or sleep may affect these changes.
