Infrared Sauna for Glucose Control
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial examines whether a single 40-minute infrared sauna session can help control blood sugar levels, particularly after eating, in individuals at risk for metabolic issues. Participants will visit the lab twice: once for a sauna session and once for a rest period. Researchers will monitor blood sugar with a sensor on the arm. Ideal candidates have a larger waist size, a higher body mass index, and access to transportation for lab visits. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to innovative research that may enhance metabolic health management.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
Yes, you must stop taking medications that affect blood sugar to participate in this trial.
What prior data suggests that this infrared sauna session is safe for glucose control?
Research has shown that infrared sauna sessions are generally safe for most people, including those with diabetes. One source noted that sauna use is safe if blood sugar levels remain controlled.
No major safety concerns exist for a single session. However, studies suggest that using an infrared sauna can help lower blood pressure and reduce waist size, both beneficial for heart health.
Some reports warn that sauna use might enhance insulin sensitivity, potentially causing blood sugar to drop more than expected. Therefore, individuals with diabetes should closely monitor their blood sugar levels.
Overall, most people tolerate infrared sauna sessions well, but it's important to consider any personal health conditions.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about using infrared sauna sessions for glucose control because it offers a non-invasive and drug-free alternative. Unlike traditional treatments for managing blood sugar, such as insulin therapy or oral medications, infrared saunas work by using heat to potentially improve blood circulation and metabolic function. This innovative approach is appealing because it could provide a relaxing way to help manage glucose levels while avoiding the side effects associated with medications.
What evidence suggests that an infrared sauna session is effective for glucose control?
This trial will compare the effects of an infrared sauna session with a resting condition on glucose control. Studies have shown that a single infrared sauna session does not consistently lower post-meal blood sugar levels. In some cases, blood sugar even increased after a session. Research indicates that sauna heat can elevate certain hormones, potentially raising blood sugar temporarily. However, regular sauna use might aid blood sugar control by improving circulation and reducing stress. Overall, current evidence does not support significant short-term benefits from just one sauna session for managing blood sugar.16789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults aged 30-55 who are overweight or obese (BMI ≥27), have a large waist size, and can travel to the lab. People can't join if they exercise intensely often, use saunas regularly, take blood sugar medications, are pregnant, or have diabetes or heart/low blood pressure issues.Inclusion Criteria
Exclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Familiarization
Participants complete a familiarization session with two 20-minute infrared sauna exposures
Treatment
Participants undergo two lab visits: one involving a sauna session and one placebo visit (resting condition)
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for glucose control using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) over a 24-hour period following each session
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Infrared Sauna Session
- Resting Condition
Trial Overview
The study compares how a single 40-minute infrared sauna session versus just resting affects blood sugar control after meals in people at risk for metabolic problems. Each participant tries both conditions on separate visits while wearing a glucose monitor.
