What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether a specialized pre-surgery program can help women with stage III-IVA gynecologic cancer improve their physical and mental health before surgery. The program, called physiatry-led prehabilitation, aims to enhance patients' overall function and well-being. It includes personalized exercise, nutrition, and mental health goals. Patients with stage III-IVA gynecologic cancer who plan to start treatment at City of Hope Orange County and are ready to engage in a home-based program may be suitable candidates for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study offers patients the chance to contribute to innovative care strategies that could enhance pre-surgery preparation and recovery.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that physiatry-led cancer prehabilitation is safe for gynecologic cancer patients?

Research has shown that physiatry-led cancer prehabilitation is generally safe and well-tolerated. Studies have found that this type of prehabilitation can improve walking ability and reduce complications after surgery. For instance, one study found that over 77% of patients walked better before their surgery. Another review indicated that prehabilitation can lower the risk of lung and other complications, improve heart function, and aid recovery after surgery.

These findings suggest that prehabilitation not only helps patients physically prepare for surgery but also does so safely, without major side effects. Overall, the evidence supports the safety and positive impact of physiatry-led cancer prehabilitation on patients' recovery and quality of life.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the physiatry-led cancer prehabilitation for ovarian cancer because it offers a holistic approach that integrates physical, nutritional, and psychospiritual support. Unlike standard treatments that primarily focus on chemotherapy or surgery, this method empowers patients to actively participate in their care through a home-based program. It includes aerobic and resistance exercises, personalized nutrition guidance, and mental health support, all tailored to each patient's needs. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance overall well-being and potentially improve recovery outcomes, setting it apart from traditional treatment options.

What evidence suggests that physiatry-led prehabilitation is effective for improving function in stage III-IVA gynecologic cancer patients?

Research has shown that prehabilitation, led by physical medicine specialists, benefits ovarian cancer patients. In this trial, participants will receive physiatry-led prehabilitation, which prepares them for surgery by enhancing physical and mental health. For example, more than 77% of patients in a prehabilitation program improved their walking ability before surgery. This approach also aids recovery after surgery, improving it by 60% and reducing complications by 40%. Patients undergoing prehabilitation often tolerate chemotherapy better, with fewer needing to lower their doses. Overall, prehabilitation helps patients feel better and recover more quickly.23467
