What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new massage technology called EMMA, which stands for Expert Manipulative Massage Automation. The goal is to determine if this massage can help individuals with chronic low back pain, particularly those with sore spots or trigger points in their lower back muscles. Ideal candidates are adults who have experienced low back pain for at least three months and whose pain affects their daily life. Participants should be comfortable lying on their back and stomach during the study procedures. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative pain relief methods.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial requires that you do not use short-acting opioid painkillers or sedating medications within 24 hours of the study visit. Other medications are not specifically mentioned, so it's best to discuss your current medications with the study team.

What prior data suggests that this method is safe for treating chronic low back pain?

Research shows that EMMA, a special massage robot, is safe for use in massage therapy. Studies have found that trained professionals using EMMA report no negative side effects. This indicates that people have not experienced problems from the treatment. EMMA uses sensors and 3D vision to deliver massages, allowing it to adjust pressure accurately. So far, those who have tried EMMA have responded well, making it a promising option for pain relief.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike traditional treatments for chronic low back pain, such as physical therapy, medications, or manual massage therapy, EMMA (Expert Manipulative Massage Automation) offers a unique, automated approach. EMMA employs an advanced robotic system to deliver precise and consistent massage therapy, potentially enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of the treatment. Researchers are excited about EMMA because it could provide a more standardized treatment experience, reduce human error, and improve accessibility for patients who may not have access to skilled manual therapists.

What evidence suggests that EMMA is effective for chronic low back pain?

Research has shown that massage therapy can help ease chronic low back pain. One study found that 63% of participants who received thorough massage therapy reported being pain-free after one month. In this trial, participants will receive massage therapy using the EMMA system, a robotic arm designed to provide massages and offer similar benefits. It employs techniques similar to those of a skilled human therapist, such as Tuina massage, which has shown promise in reducing pain. Although research on EMMA is still developing, its design suggests it could be as effective as human-delivered massages for managing pain.36789
