What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a home-based exercise program called CAREFit-BMT to determine if it improves heart health in individuals with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) preparing for a stem cell transplant. The program includes aerobic activities and strength training to help participants safely undergo the transplant process. Individuals recently diagnosed with high-risk AML who can perform moderate exercise might be suitable for this trial. Participants must have access to a smartphone and be able to communicate in English. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance pre-transplant care for future patients.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this exercise intervention is safe for patients with acute myeloid leukemia?

Research has shown that the CAREFit-BMT home exercise program is safe for individuals with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In a study of AML patients aged 40 and older, participants reported no harmful effects during the exercise program. This indicates that patients can follow the program without concern for negative side effects. The program includes moderate-level aerobic exercises and strength training, tailored to each person's fitness level and health. This preparation can help patients undergo a stem cell transplant with fewer risks.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike the standard treatments for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which often include chemotherapy and stem cell transplants, the CAREFit-BMT exercise program focuses on integrating moderate-intensity aerobic and strength exercises into patients' daily routines. This at-home exercise intervention is unique because it empowers patients to take an active role in their treatment and recovery from the comfort of their own homes. Researchers are excited about this approach because it not only aims to improve physical fitness and quality of life but also has the potential to enhance treatment outcomes without adding the toxic side effects typically associated with traditional AML therapies.

What evidence suggests that the CAREFit-BMT exercise intervention is effective for improving heart function in patients with acute myeloid leukemia?

Studies have shown that exercise can improve heart health in patients with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) undergoing stem cell transplants. In this trial, participants will engage in the CAREFit-BMT home-based exercise program, which includes moderate aerobic and strength exercises. Research indicates that programs like CAREFit-BMT are safe and effective for patients aged 40 and older. This program may enhance fitness levels and overall quality of life. By improving heart health, these exercises could ease the transition to stem cell transplants for high-risk AML patients. Evidence suggests that exercise plays a crucial role in managing heart health during intensive cancer treatments.14678
