Medically Tailored Meals for Chronic Kidney Disease
(VETCKD Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether meals specially designed for people with kidney disease can improve health and well-being. Participants will either receive these medically tailored meals (MTMs) or continue their normal care for three months, then switch. The study will examine factors such as blood pressure, kidney health, and quality of life. Veterans with stage 3b or 4 kidney disease who have high blood pressure and can receive meal deliveries might be suitable candidates for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance dietary care for kidney disease patients.
What prior data suggests that medically tailored meals are safe for Veterans with kidney disease?
Research has shown that meals specifically designed for medical needs, known as medically tailored meals (MTMs), are generally safe and easy for patients to manage. Studies have found that these meals can improve health for individuals with chronic illnesses, such as kidney disease, by facilitating adherence to recommended diets. Evidence suggests that recipients of MTMs often eat healthier and require less medical care. Many patients also find these meals helpful and satisfying. Although MTMs are not a direct medical treatment, they support overall health and well-being, with no major safety issues reported.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about medically tailored meals (MTMs) for chronic kidney disease because they offer a personalized approach to nutrition that aligns with specific dietary needs of patients. Unlike standard treatments that mainly focus on medication and dialysis, MTMs provide meals designed to support kidney and cardiovascular health, potentially reducing the need for more intensive interventions. Additionally, these meals come with nutrition education and dietary support, empowering patients to make informed choices about their health. This holistic approach could improve overall health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with chronic kidney disease.
What evidence suggests that medically tailored meals might be an effective treatment for chronic kidney disease?
Research has shown that medically tailored meals (MTMs) can benefit people with chronic kidney disease. Studies have found that these meals can delay the need for dialysis, which cleans the blood when kidneys aren't functioning well. MTMs are associated with 31% fewer hospital stays and can save over $12,000 in healthcare costs per patient in some cases. In trials, 65% of participants reported the meals as very helpful. This trial will compare participants receiving MTMs with those in a wait-list control group. Overall, MTMs improve diet quality and health outcomes for individuals with kidney and other chronic diseases.678910

Trial Overview
The study tests whether providing medically tailored meals improves health, diet, and quality of life compared to usual care. Participants are randomly assigned to receive the special meals or standard care for 3 months, then switch groups.
How Is the Trial Designed?

Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Participants randomized to this arm will continue usual clinical care without study-provided medically tailored meals during the initial 3-month randomized period. After completing the 3-month assessment, participants will cross over to receive the medically tailored meals intervention for 3 months.
Participants randomized to this arm will receive medically tailored meals for 3 months in addition to usual clinical care. Meals will be designed to support dietary recommendations for chronic kidney disease, kidney and cardiovascular health. Participants will also receive nutrition education and study-related dietary support.
