What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how corn and avocado oils might help lower cholesterol levels. Participants will follow a specific diet that includes these oils to assess their impact on heart health. The trial targets individuals with mildly to moderately high cholesterol who can adhere to a controlled diet and attend clinic check-ups. Participants should not have diabetes or heart disease and must consume only the foods provided during the trial periods. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding dietary impacts on cholesterol.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial requires that you do not change the dosage or start new medications that affect cholesterol or lipid levels within 12 weeks before the trial starts. Some specific medications and supplements must be stopped 2 to 12 weeks before the trial, depending on the type. It's best to discuss your current medications with the study team to see if any changes are needed.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Past studies have shown that corn oil lowers cholesterol levels with few problems. It reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) and total cholesterol. Reports indicate that people generally tolerate corn oil well in their diet, with no significant side effects noted.

Research also suggests that avocado oil is safe. Studies show it can lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and is rich in healthy fats. People usually handle avocado oil well, with no major side effects reported.

Both oils have been studied for their cholesterol-lowering abilities. Previous research suggests they are safe and well-tolerated by most people.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatments?

Researchers are excited about using corn and avocado oils for managing high cholesterol because these oils offer a natural alternative to traditional medications like statins. Unlike standard treatments that often work by inhibiting cholesterol production in the liver, these oils are rich in unsaturated fats, which can help lower LDL cholesterol levels naturally. Furthermore, incorporating these oils into everyday foods like yogurt, dinner rolls, and muffins makes them an easy addition to daily diets, potentially improving adherence and overall heart health.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for high cholesterol?

This trial will compare the effects of corn oil and avocado oil on cholesterol levels. Research has shown that both oils can help lower cholesterol, which is crucial for heart health. Participants in the corn oil arm will receive corn oil, which studies have found can reduce "bad" cholesterol (LDL) by about 10.9% and total cholesterol by 8.2%. Corn oil contains phytosterols, substances that help block cholesterol absorption in the body. Participants in the avocado oil arm will receive avocado oil, which also lowers LDL and total cholesterol. Additionally, avocado oil reduces inflammation, benefiting heart health. Overall, both oils show promise for improving cholesterol levels and reducing heart-related risks.12467

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for men and women aged 18-74 who are generally healthy but have mildly to moderately high cholesterol. Participants must have a BMI between 18.5 and under 35, specific cholesterol levels, be able to visit the clinic regularly, and agree to eat only study-provided foods during each diet phase.
