What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests an app designed to improve adherence to PrEP (a medication to prevent HIV) among Black adolescents and young adults in Atlanta. The Health MPowerment App, based on Social Cognitive Theory, encourages consistent PrEP use by focusing on learning from others. Participants and their chosen adult supporters will use the app for six months to track PrEP use and communicate. The study seeks African Americans in specific Atlanta counties who engage in sexual activities suggesting a potential benefit from PrEP, such as having multiple partners or recent sexually transmitted infections. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance HIV prevention strategies.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your healthcare provider.

What prior data suggests that the Health MPowerment App is safe for use in promoting PrEP adherence?

Research has shown that digital health tools, such as the Health MPowerment App, generally pose low risk. This app aids users in managing their health more effectively, particularly by reducing behaviors that increase HIV risk. Protecting user data remains a priority, with features like an emergency lockout code ensuring information security. Although detailed safety data for this specific app is lacking, similar mobile health tools have been well-received and deemed safe. Overall, the app seems to be a safe option for supporting HIV prevention efforts.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

The Health MPowerment App is an innovative approach to HIV prevention that stands out because it leverages technology to enhance communication and medication tracking. Unlike traditional methods, which might rely on face-to-face counseling or manual tracking of medication adherence, this app provides a digital platform for young adults and their support persons to interact and monitor PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) usage more effectively. Researchers are excited about this app because it combines the convenience of a mobile tool with the critical function of real-time medication tracking, potentially leading to better adherence and outcomes in HIV prevention.

What evidence suggests that the Health MPowerment App is effective for promoting PrEP adherence?

Research has shown that the Health MPowerment App helps reduce risky behaviors related to HIV. It provides a space for social support and community building, which can enhance HIV prevention and care. Studies have found that the app aids adherence to PrEP (a medication to prevent HIV) by tracking doses and sending reminders. Participants in this trial will use the app for six months. Previous research indicates they may significantly improve their medication adherence and confidence in succeeding. The app specifically targets young Black men who have sex with men, a group at higher risk for HIV.12456
