What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a virtual rehabilitation program called Virtual Neurophysiological Rehabilitation, designed to assist older veterans with cognitive difficulties and a risk of falling. The program aims to enhance balance, strength, mobility, and daily activities to prevent falls and related injuries. It suits individuals living in the community who have experienced a fall or have concerns about falling and have been diagnosed with some level of cognitive impairment. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could improve quality of life.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial excludes people who are currently using medications that affect mental state, so you may need to stop taking such medications to participate.

What prior data suggests that this virtual tele-neurorehabilitation intervention is safe for older adults with cognitive impairment?

Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) technology effectively and safely improves brain function. Studies have found VR to be a helpful tool for enhancing cognitive skills, particularly in older adults with mild memory issues. Monitored sessions ensure safety, and no major negative effects have been reported. Additionally, VR use has been linked to improvements in daily activities and cognitive abilities. This suggests that the virtual rehabilitation under study is likely well-tolerated with minimal risk.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Virtual Neurophysiological Rehabilitation is unique because it leverages virtual reality technology to enhance cognitive function. Unlike traditional cognitive therapies, which often rely on repetitive paper-and-pencil tasks or computer programs, this approach immerses participants in an interactive and engaging virtual environment. Researchers are excited about this treatment as it could provide a more personalized and adaptive experience, potentially leading to better outcomes for those with cognitive impairment.

What evidence suggests that virtual neurophysiological rehabilitation is effective for cognitive impairment?

Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) for brain training can enhance thinking skills in individuals with mild memory problems. For instance, studies have found that VR activities can improve memory and overall mental abilities. One study discovered that VR-based exercises led to better thinking and movement skills. Another report noted improvements in mental function among older adults, particularly those with certain mental health issues. While results can vary, these findings suggest that VR could be a promising tool for boosting mental skills and reducing fall risk in older adults. In this trial, all participants will receive the Virtual Neurophysiological Rehabilitation intervention to explore its potential benefits.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for older adults living at home who have mild cognitive impairment and are at risk of falling—such as those who've fallen in the past year, take longer on a balance test, or worry about falling. Participants must be able to give written consent.

Inclusion Criteria

* community dwelling
I am at risk for falls based on my recent history or concerns.
