GaitBetter Training for Stroke Rehabilitation
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new system called GaitBetter, designed to help people regain walking ability after a stroke. The study evaluates GaitBetter's effectiveness for both recent stroke survivors and those who experienced a stroke over six months ago. Participants must be able to walk at least 15 meters and have lingering leg movement issues from their stroke. As an unphased trial, this study provides participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could improve stroke recovery for many.
What prior data suggests that the GaitBetter system is safe for gait rehabilitation after stroke?
Research has shown that the GaitBetter system is generally safe for people who have had a stroke. In studies involving recent stroke patients, those who engaged in high-intensity walking training showed significant improvement without encountering new safety issues. They did not experience any new or increased risks during the treatment.
For individuals who had a stroke some time ago, the GaitBetter system proved safe in a controlled setting. It is designed to safely mimic real-life walking challenges, aiding users in improving without unnecessary risks.
Overall, research supports the GaitBetter system as a safe method to help stroke survivors walk better and reduce the risk of falls.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about GaitBetter because it offers a dual approach to rehabilitation, targeting both motor and cognitive functions, which is not typical of current treatments. Most stroke rehabilitation focuses solely on physical recovery, like physiotherapy, but GaitBetter integrates cognitive training with motor exercises to enhance overall recovery. This system also uses advanced technology to provide personalized feedback and adjustments, potentially leading to more effective and faster improvements in gait and balance, especially for stroke survivors dealing with chronic and sub-acute conditions.
What evidence suggests that the GaitBetter system is effective for gait rehabilitation after stroke?
Studies have shown that the GaitBetter system improves walking and balance in people who have had a stroke. This trial will evaluate GaitBetter's efficacy in two areas. One arm will focus on improving rehabilitation outcomes for those recovering from a recent stroke. High-intensity gait training (HIGT) has already led to better movement and increased chances of returning home instead of needing more care. This suggests that GaitBetter, which uses similar methods, could aid in recovery. The other arm will assess GaitBetter's efficacy in enhancing motor-cognitive function in individuals who experienced a stroke some time ago. GaitBetter training has improved walking and thinking skills, making it a promising tool for long-term recovery. Overall, research supports GaitBetter as a helpful treatment for stroke survivors.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults aged 18–85 who have had a stroke affecting one side of their body and have trouble walking. Participants must be able to walk at least 15 meters (with or without help), have some leg weakness from the stroke, and get medical clearance. People with severe cognitive, vision, or communication problems, recent leg injuries, certain infections, or other neurological diseases cannot join.Inclusion Criteria

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- GaitBetter
Trial Overview
The study compares treadmill gait training using the GaitBetter system—with or without standard care—against standard care alone in people recovering from stroke. The goal is to see if GaitBetter helps improve walking ability and prevent falls.
How Is the Trial Designed?

Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
The investigators propose a randomized, controlled study to evaluate the effects of using the GaitBetter system in patients with subacute stroke on recovery trajectory.
The investigators propose a single-arm, non-randomized study to test the hypothesis that the GaitBetter training is effective in improving gait and cognition in individuals with chronic stroke. This design was chosen given the expected stability of functional recovery in this population.
