What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine whether lung ultrasounds can shorten hospital stays and reduce repeat visits for individuals with acute heart failure. Participants will have their ultrasound results either shared with their care team or kept confidential to compare outcomes. The trial is ideal for those admitted to St. Mary's Hospital with acute heart conditions, such as heart failure, who are willing to undergo daily lung ultrasound checks. As an unphased trial, it provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance future heart failure care.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that lung ultrasound is safe for heart failure patients?

Research has shown that lung ultrasound is generally safe and well-tolerated for people with heart failure. As a non-invasive procedure, it does not involve surgery or entering the body. Studies have found that lung ultrasound surpasses chest X-rays in detecting fluid in the lungs, particularly in cases of sudden heart failure. This allows for accurate identification of lung issues without causing harm.

Regarding side effects, research has not reported any major negative effects from lung ultrasounds, suggesting that patients typically do not experience harmful effects. Since lung ultrasound is already widely used in medical settings, it has a proven safety record.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about using lung ultrasound for heart failure because it offers a non-invasive, real-time method to assess fluid in the lungs, which is crucial for managing heart failure. Unlike traditional methods such as chest X-rays or CT scans, lung ultrasound doesn't expose patients to radiation and can be done bedside, providing immediate results. This approach could potentially improve how quickly and effectively doctors adjust treatment plans, especially when compared to standard imaging techniques that require more time and resources.

What evidence suggests that lung ultrasound is effective for heart failure?

Research has shown that lung ultrasound aids in managing heart failure by quickly detecting fluid in the lungs, a key indicator of the condition. Studies have found that lung ultrasound can expedite the diagnosis of heart failure where the heart pumps normally but still functions poorly. It also assists doctors in determining the best treatment. In this trial, participants in Group 1 will undergo daily lung ultrasound with results reported to provider care teams, while Group 2 will have their results blinded to the care teams. This tool is particularly useful for predicting whether a patient might need to return to the hospital or visit urgent care due to heart issues. By identifying lung congestion early, lung ultrasound can help doctors develop better treatment plans and potentially improve patient health.26789

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

1-2 weeks

Treatment

Participants undergo daily lung ultrasound examinations with results either reported to or blinded from provider care teams

Hospital stay (variable)
Daily visits (in-hospital)

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment, including changes in diuresis and lung congestion

Up to 90 days

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • Lung Ultrasound

Trial Overview

The study compares daily lung ultrasound exams plus standard care versus standard care alone in people hospitalized for acute heart failure, aiming to see if the ultrasound group has shorter hospital stays and fewer repeat hospitalizations.
