Citicoline for Mood in Healthy Adults
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if citicoline, a dietary supplement, can improve mood in healthy adults compared to a placebo (a harmless pill with no active ingredients). Participants must experience moderate mood disturbances but remain generally healthy, excluding conditions like high blood pressure or depression. Ideal candidates should not smoke, drink heavily, or use certain nootropic supplements or medications. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to the scientific understanding of mood improvement through dietary supplements.
Do I need to stop taking my current medications to join the trial?
Yes, if you are currently using medications to treat anxiety or depression, you will need to stop taking them to participate in this trial. The trial excludes participants who are on these medications.
Is there any evidence suggesting that citicoline is likely to be safe for humans?
Research has shown that citicoline is generally safe and well-tolerated. It has been administered in various forms, such as pills or injections, without causing harmful effects. Most individuals do not experience serious side effects. Some have reported minor issues like stomach pain, back pain, blurred vision, or constipation, but these are uncommon.
Citicoline has also been safely taken orally for up to 12 weeks. It is often used to support brain function and memory, contributing to its safety profile. Overall, available research indicates that citicoline appears to be a safe option.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Citicoline is unique because it is a naturally occurring compound that supports brain health and may positively impact mood. Unlike traditional treatments for mood, such as SSRIs or SNRIs, which work by altering serotonin and norepinephrine levels, citicoline is thought to enhance neurotransmitter synthesis and improve brain function directly. Researchers are excited about citicoline because it offers a novel approach by potentially enhancing cognitive function and mood without the side effects commonly associated with standard antidepressants.
What evidence suggests that citicoline might be an effective treatment for mood?
Research shows that citicoline might boost mood and brain function. One study found that citicoline improved mood and thinking skills in people with mild memory problems. Another study suggested it could help with memory and focus in older adults. Although these studies did not specifically examine healthy adults, the positive effects on mood in other groups are encouraging. In this trial, participants will receive either citicoline or a placebo to evaluate its potential mood-enhancing effects in healthy adults. Evidence suggests that citicoline might improve mood by supporting brain health.35678
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
