What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a treatment called ultrasound-guided dry needling for headache relief. The goal is to determine if inserting tiny needles into tight neck muscles can reduce headache symptoms. Ultrasound, a type of imaging, precisely guides the needles to enhance safety and effectiveness. Individuals who have experienced headaches in the past 6 months and feel tenderness at the base of their skull may be suitable candidates. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative headache treatment research.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but you cannot participate if you are currently using anticoagulant or anti-platelet medications.

What prior data suggests that this ultrasound-guided dry needling technique is safe for headaches?

Previous studies have shown that dry needling is generally safe for treating headaches. Research indicates that most people tolerate it well. For example, one study found that 73.8% of patients reported less pain with dry needling, while only 17.6% experienced worsening symptoms. Another study focused on ultrasound-guided dry needling and found it effective in reducing migraine attacks, with no major safety issues reported.

Ultrasound enhances the accuracy and safety of needling, especially in sensitive areas like near the base of the skull. This technique allows for precise needle placement, reducing the risk of hitting important structures such as nerves and arteries.

Overall, evidence suggests that ultrasound-guided dry needling is a safe option for many people with headaches, though individual experiences can vary.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Ultrasound-guided dry needling is unique because it offers a precise, minimally invasive way to potentially alleviate headaches. Unlike traditional treatments like medications or physical therapy, this technique uses ultrasound to accurately guide the needle to muscle trigger points, which may enhance effectiveness and reduce side effects. Researchers are excited about this approach because it could provide faster relief and target the root cause of pain more directly than conventional treatments.

What evidence suggests that ultrasound-guided dry needling is effective for headaches?

Research has shown that dry needling can effectively reduce headache pain and frequency. In one study, patients reported a 90% decrease in pain, with relief lasting up to a month. Another study found that dry needling lessened headache intensity and frequency, though it had a smaller effect on the interference with daily activities. In this trial, participants will receive ultrasound-guided dry needling, which enhances precision and may improve safety and effectiveness. Overall, this technique appears promising for treating tension-type headaches, migraines, and headaches related to neck issues.12678

  • Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling

Trial Overview

The study tests whether using ultrasound to guide dry needling into a deep neck muscle (rectus capitis posterior major) can safely and accurately reduce headache symptoms after one session. Ultrasound helps ensure precise needle placement.
