What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests whether a mindfulness meditation app can improve the lives of teenagers with moderate to severe eczema. Researchers aim to determine if regular meditation can ease condition management and enhance overall well-being. Participants will either use a meditation app or read about mindfulness techniques. This trial suits teens aged 12-17 whose eczema hasn't improved with regular creams or ointments. As an unphased trial, it provides a unique opportunity for teens to explore innovative ways to enhance their quality of life.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications. However, if you have started a biologic agent like dupixent in the past 3 months, you cannot participate.

What prior data suggests that digital mindfulness meditation is safe for adolescents with atopic dermatitis?

Research has shown that digital mindfulness meditation is generally safe. Studies have found it can lower stress, improve sleep, and relieve physical symptoms. Most people tolerate it well, with no major side effects reported. For teenagers with atopic dermatitis, mindfulness techniques can help manage symptoms like itching and improve overall quality of life. These findings suggest that using a mindfulness meditation app should be safe for those considering joining the trial.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike traditional eczema treatments, which often rely on topical creams or oral medications to reduce inflammation and itching, the digital mindfulness meditation app aims to address eczema by promoting mental well-being. This method is unique because it uses a digital app to deliver mindfulness meditation, potentially reducing stress levels, which can exacerbate eczema symptoms. Researchers are excited about this approach as it offers a non-invasive, accessible option that can complement existing treatments and empower patients to manage their condition through mindfulness and stress reduction.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for atopic dermatitis?

This trial will compare two approaches to mindfulness meditation for managing symptoms of atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema. Participants in one arm will use a digital mindfulness meditation app. Research shows that this app can reduce stress, improve sleep, and lessen physical symptoms. Participants in the other arm will read an information sheet on mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness techniques, in particular, can enhance quality of life and reduce the emotional impact of itching. Evidence also suggests that these techniques can improve disease severity and psychological well-being for those with eczema. Overall, incorporating mindfulness practices may help manage eczema symptoms by promoting better control over stress and emotions.12456
