What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how active video games can help people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes improve their health. The researchers aim to determine if regular gaming can lead to weight loss and better blood sugar control. Participants will use a special gaming console several times a week for about 45 minutes per session as part of the Nex Playground Activity Program. The trial suits children and young adults, ages 5-21, who are overweight, have Type 2 diabetes, and are patients at the University of Miami Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance health outcomes for many.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that the Nex Playground Activity Program is safe for patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus?

Research has shown that the Nex Playground Activity Program is designed to be safe. It holds a kidSAFE+ COPPA certification, ensuring it is safe for children and protects their privacy. While specific data on negative effects from this program is not available, it encourages physical activity through gaming, which is generally safe and beneficial for health. The program promotes regular exercise, known to improve fitness and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems. This indicates that the program is well-received, with no major safety issues reported to date.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Nex Playground Activity Program because it introduces a fun, interactive way to tackle obesity using a gaming console. Unlike traditional treatments that focus on dietary changes or medications, this program encourages physical activity through engaging play sessions. The unique feature of scanning an activity-tracking QR code during each session helps participants stay accountable and track their progress. This innovative approach could make exercise more appealing and sustainable, especially for younger individuals.

What evidence suggests that the Nex Playground Activity Program is effective for obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus?

Research has shown that playing active video games can aid in weight loss and improve body shape. One study found that playing these games for six months led to weight loss and increased physical activity. Another study demonstrated that programs focused on physical activity can significantly lower BMI, a measure of body fat based on weight and height, for most people. These findings suggest that the Nex Playground Activity Program, which participants in this trial will use, could help individuals with obesity and Type 2 diabetes manage their weight and health.678910
