Implementation Support for Communication Disability

(DECA Trial)

This trial tests a support package designed to help clinics better document and accommodate communication disabilities (CD) in patients' electronic health records (EHR). The goal is to ensure clinics can provide necessary communication aids to patients with CD. Clinics will either use this new Implementation Support Package or continue their usual practices to determine which approach is more effective. The trial seeks patients with communication disabilities who have visited participating clinics at least once and can communicate in English without an interpreter. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to improve clinic practices for patients with communication disabilities.

Research has shown that using a support package to help clinics document and address communication disabilities (CD) is generally safe. A review on fair communication access found that these tools do not pose health risks. Instead, they enhance communication between patients and healthcare providers, leading to better healthcare outcomes. The goal is to ensure that patients with CDs can fully engage in their care. No reports indicate negative effects from using these support packages in healthcare settings.
