Energy Dense Fueling for Cold Exposure
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to study how different types of energy bars affect exercise performance and energy use in cold weather. Participants will consume bars high in either carbohydrates or fats while exercising in a cold environment. The goal is to determine which type of bar better maintains energy and performance. This trial suits physically active men and women who exercise at least twice a week and are comfortable in cold conditions. As an unphased trial, participants contribute to valuable research that may enhance exercise nutrition strategies.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial requires participants to stop using medications that affect macronutrient utilization or the ability to exercise, such as diabetes medications, statins, and corticosteroids. If you are on such medications, you may need to stop taking them to participate.
What prior data suggests that this protocol is safe for participants?
In a previous study, researchers found that eating foods high in fat and calories can help people maintain energy levels in cold conditions. These foods might replace the energy lost in cold weather. However, detailed information about the safety of a high-fat snack bar specifically for cold conditions is lacking.
Studies on high-fat diets usually show that most people tolerate them well. However, detailed information about any side effects from this specific high-fat bar is unavailable. Generally, these studies suggest such products are safe, but individual reactions can vary.
Since this study is exploratory, participants should know that while similar studies have not indicated serious problems, monitoring personal well-being during the trial is important to ensure comfort and safety.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Energy Dense Fueling approach for cold exposure because it explores how different nutritional compositions can optimize energy use in extreme environments. Unlike traditional methods that may rely on balanced meals or standard energy bars, this trial examines the effects of a Higher Fat Supplement Bar and a Higher Carbohydrate Supplement Bar to determine which is more effective at providing sustained energy and warmth. By pinpointing the optimal nutritional strategy, this approach could offer a tailored solution for individuals facing harsh, cold conditions, potentially improving endurance and comfort more effectively than existing options.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for managing energy deficits during cold exposure?
Research shows that consuming foods high in fat and calories can increase energy intake, which may be beneficial in cold weather. Exposure to cold makes the body use more energy, leading to increased calorie burning. Cold conditions can also activate brown fat, which helps burn regular fat and maintain warmth. Studies have found that people tend to consume more fat than carbohydrates or proteins in cold conditions, suggesting that a higher-fat diet might be more effective. In this trial, participants will receive either the Higher Fat Supplement Bar or the Higher Carbohydrate Supplement Bar. The Higher Fat Supplement Bar may help maintain energy and performance in cold weather.14678
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for healthy, physically active men and women aged 18-39 (or 17 if active military) with a BMI between 18.5-30, who can avoid alcohol, nicotine, supplements, and outside caffeine during the study. Women must have regular menstrual cycles or use certain contraceptives. Participants need supervisor approval if at NSSC.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Baseline Assessment
Baseline data collection on volunteer height, weight, body composition, and V̇O2peak. Practice sessions of all exercise protocols.
Treatment
Participants consume either a higher carbohydrate or higher fat isocaloric bar under cold conditions, followed by exercise protocols including steady-state treadmill exercise and a 2-mile time trial.
Washout Period
Minimum washout period between protocol days to prevent carryover effects.
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment.

Trial Overview
The study compares two types of energy bars—one high in carbohydrates and one high in fat—to see how they affect energy use and exercise performance during cold exposure. Each participant tries both bars on separate days while doing treadmill exercises under controlled conditions.
