CSNAT for Reducing Elder Mistreatment Risk
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) to determine its effectiveness for family caregivers of older adults receiving home medical visits. The tool identifies caregivers' needs and supports them through discussions with healthcare providers. The trial compares the CSNAT method with usual care to assess its impact on reducing caregiver stress and improving well-being, potentially lowering the risk of mistreatment of the care recipient. This trial targets caregivers who regularly assist older adults with daily tasks and medical needs at home. As an unphased trial, it offers caregivers the opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance support systems and improve caregiver well-being.
What prior data suggests that the CSNAT intervention is safe for family caregivers?
Research has shown that the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) is safe and easy for caregivers to use. In an Australian study, caregivers who used CSNAT felt less stressed while providing care. This indicates that the tool is both helpful and safe. No negative effects were reported from using CSNAT. Overall, CSNAT seems to be a dependable and supportive tool for caregivers without any safety issues.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) because it offers a proactive, structured approach to reducing elder mistreatment risk by focusing on caregiver needs. Unlike standard care, which often relies on informal conversations, CSNAT provides a formal assessment followed by targeted support and problem-solving discussions with a clinician. This method not only helps prioritize and address specific caregiver needs but also connects them with valuable resources, aiming for a more comprehensive and systematic support system.
What evidence suggests that the CSNAT intervention is effective for reducing elder mistreatment risk?
Research has shown that the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT), which participants in this trial may receive, helps family caregivers by identifying their support needs. This tool aims to reduce caregiver stress and improve their mental and physical health. Studies suggest that when caregivers feel more supported, the risk of mistreating or neglecting the older adults they care for might decrease. Although specific data on CSNAT's effectiveness is limited, structured support and problem-solving have shown promise in similar situations. This makes CSNAT a hopeful option for improving outcomes for both caregivers and patients.678910
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for family caregivers of older adults who are receiving home-based primary care. Participants should be actively involved in caregiving and able to take part in study activities.Inclusion Criteria

Trial Overview
The study is testing the CSNAT intervention, a structured tool that helps identify and address caregiver support needs through guided conversations with clinicians. Caregivers will be randomly assigned to either receive this support or continue with usual care.
How Is the Trial Designed?

Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Active Control
The Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) is a caregiver-centered intervention designed to identify and address family caregiver support needs. The intervention includes completion of the CSNAT assessment followed by structured support and problem-solving discussions with a clinician to prioritize needs, develop action plans, and connect caregivers with available resources.
Participants in this arm will receive usual home-based primary care services. As part of standard practice, family caregivers may engage in informal, ad hoc conversations with the visiting nurse practitioner regarding caregiving needs and concerns during routine home care visits for the older adult receiving care. Caregivers in this arm will not receive the structured Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) intervention. Participants will complete study assessments at baseline and post-intervention.
