What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, specifically the AI Clinical Summarization Tool (Evidently), can help outpatient specialists reduce paperwork by summarizing patient records. The study investigates whether this tool can decrease workload and improve the overall documentation experience for clinicians. Eligible participants include outpatient specialists at UNC who regularly see patients and do not have extended time away planned during the study. Researchers divide participants into two groups: one using the AI tool and another continuing with their usual documentation process. As an unphased trial, this study offers specialists the chance to explore innovative technology that could enhance their workflow and patient care.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not involve patients or change medical care, so it does not specify any requirements about stopping current medications.

What prior data suggests that this AI tool is safe for clinicians?

Research has shown that the AI tool, Evidently, is safe for doctors to use. Studies have found that using AI to assist in writing hospital discharge notes is safe and reduces stress for doctors. Evidently is unlikely to harm patients or doctors. Many doctors reported feeling less stressed when using the tool, as it helped them manage their work better. Overall, healthcare providers have received the tool positively, finding it helpful.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the AI Clinical Summarization Tool, Evidently, because it has the potential to significantly reduce clinician burnout by streamlining the documentation process. Unlike traditional methods, which often involve time-consuming chart reviews and manual note-taking, Evidently uses advanced AI to automatically summarize patient data, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care. This tool is integrated into the existing clinical workflow, making it a seamless addition to daily routines without requiring substantial changes in practice. The ease of onboarding with standardized training materials and optional personalization further enhances its appeal, paving the way for a more efficient and less stressful work environment for clinicians.

What evidence suggests that this AI tool is effective for reducing clinician burnout?

Research has shown that AI tools can help reduce doctors' workload. For example, one study found that an AI tool used by 162 doctors significantly reduced the time spent on electronic health records. This time-saving can greatly ease doctors' pressure. Another report noted that many doctors are eager to use AI tools to work more efficiently. Early feedback from doctors using similar tools indicates they appreciate the summarization feature, which allows more time for patient care and less on paperwork. In this trial, clinicians in the experimental arm will use the AI Clinical Summarization Tool (Evidently), which may enhance efficiency and reduce burnout.12678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for outpatient specialist doctors at UNC who work at least two half-days per week in a patient-facing specialty. It does not include patients and focuses only on clinicians' workflow.

Inclusion Criteria

I have at least two half-days a week for clinic visits.
* Primary specialty in an outpatient, patient-facing specialty practice within UNCFP or UNCMG.
Anesthesiologists will be enrolled under the same protocol but analyzed separately due to distinct workflow characteristics.
