Tai Chi for Breast Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether Tai Chi can relieve joint pain caused by certain breast cancer treatments. It compares Tai Chi sessions to regular health education sessions to determine which is more effective. The trial targets women with postmenopausal breast cancer who experience joint pain after starting hormone therapy. Participants should not already engage in regular exercise or Tai Chi. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore alternative pain relief methods.
What prior data suggests that Tai Chi is safe for women with breast cancer?
Research has shown that Tai Chi is generally safe for breast cancer patients. Studies have found it can improve both physical and mental health after treatment. For example, Tai Chi helps with tiredness and stress. As a gentle exercise, it is easy on the body and usually doesn't cause injuries.
Patients also respond well to Tai Chi. In various studies, participants continued with the exercise routines as well as or better than other activities like Qigong or dancing. This suggests they find it easy and safe to do regularly.
Overall, the evidence supports Tai Chi as a safe choice for enhancing recovery and quality of life after breast cancer treatment.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike conventional treatments for breast cancer, which often involve surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, Tai Chi offers a holistic approach through gentle, structured movements. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it emphasizes mindfulness, postural alignment, and integrated movement, which can potentially enhance physical and emotional well-being without the side effects of more invasive treatments. This method not only aims to improve physical strength and endurance but also promotes relaxation and mental focus, providing a comprehensive way to support recovery and quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
What evidence suggests that Tai Chi might be an effective treatment for breast cancer?
Research has shown that Tai Chi can benefit people with breast cancer. Studies have found that it improves quality of life and reduces symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Tai Chi also eases pain associated with breast cancer. Some research suggests it might lower inflammation in breast cancer survivors. In this trial, participants will be randomized into either the TaiChi4Joint group, attending virtual Tai Chi classes, or the Health Education Attention Control group, participating in routine virtual classes on survivorship content or healthy eating. While results can vary, these findings suggest Tai Chi could be a valuable addition to breast cancer treatment.14567

Active Control
Participants randomized to the TaiChi4Joint group will attend virtual Tai Chi classes via Zoom (1 hour, twice weekly for 12 weeks). At the first class, participants will review a Tai Chi safety and modifications handout. Using a manualized approach, each session includes structured objectives and activities to progressively learn simplified Tai Chi forms, with weekly verification of skill attainment. Six core elements are emphasized: (1) mindfulness (present-focused attention); (2) postural alignment (efficient, upright movement); (3) natural breathing (integrated with movement); (4) active relaxation (remaining relaxed while moving); (5) slow movement (building strength and endurance); and (6) integrated movement (coordinating functional movements).
To control for the attention that the TaiChi4Joint group receives, women randomized to the AC group will participate Routine virtual AC group classes via Zoom or via video link for 1 hour, twice a week, for 12 weeks, including survivorship content or healthy eating. The AC group is designed to control for attention and for expectations about getting some benefits from the treatment. The AC group is controlled for time and will also be 1 hour each time, twice a week, matching the frequencies and intensity of the intervention group.
