Moringa for Breastfeeding
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores the effects of moringa leaf powder on breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Researchers aim to determine if moringa can increase milk production, improve milk quality, and support the health of both mother and child. Participants will receive either a daily dose of moringa or a placebo (inactive substance) for four months. This trial suits breastfeeding mothers who are within 30 days of giving birth, have healthy, full-term babies, and have not been consuming moringa regularly. The study will track milk samples, dietary habits, and health outcomes over two years. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the opportunity to contribute to valuable research that could enhance maternal and infant health.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but if you are on blood thinners, levothyroxine, antihypertensive treatments, or are insulin-dependent, you cannot participate.
Is there any evidence suggesting that moringa leaf powder is safe for breastfeeding mothers and their infants?
Research has shown that moringa leaf powder is generally safe for breastfeeding mothers. Studies have found no harmful effects from its use in both people and animals. One study reported only a very small number of minor issues, affecting just 0.3% of participants. This suggests it is safe in the short term, but more information is needed about long-term use. Moringa is often used to help with breastfeeding and to increase milk supply, making it a popular choice for new mothers.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike the standard of care for boosting milk supply, which often includes medications like domperidone or herbal supplements like fenugreek, Moringa Leaf Powder is unique because it is derived from the nutrient-rich leaves of the Moringa tree. Researchers are excited about Moringa because it offers a natural alternative that is packed with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, potentially enhancing milk production without pharmaceuticals. Additionally, Moringa is known for its antioxidant properties, which might provide additional health benefits to both mothers and their babies.
What evidence suggests that moringa leaf powder might be an effective treatment for breastfeeding?
Research has shown that Moringa leaf powder can help breastfeeding mothers produce more breast milk. In this trial, participants will receive either a combination of Carrier and Moringa Leaf Powder or just the Carrier as a placebo comparator. Studies have found that mothers who took Moringa produced more breast milk than those who did not. Specifically, one study found that 52.3% of mothers using Moringa were exclusively breastfeeding at six months, meeting the World Health Organization's goals. Another study demonstrated that mothers using Moringa doubled their milk supply without losing any protein in the milk. Known as a natural galactagogue, Moringa helps increase milk supply. These findings suggest Moringa could be a useful supplement for new mothers wanting to boost their milk production.12367
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for mothers over 18 who have given birth to a healthy, full-term single baby within the last month and are exclusively breastfeeding. Their babies must be at least 37 weeks gestation, healthy, able to breastfeed, and between 7-21 days old at enrollment.Inclusion Criteria
