What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether scheduled meditation can aid recovery after pancreatic cancer surgery. Researchers aim to determine if the Headspace app can reduce pain, anxiety, and stress, while improving sleep and movement post-surgery. Participants will meditate either before and after surgery or begin after leaving the hospital. Individuals planning pancreatic cancer surgery, without formal meditation training, and comfortable using a smartphone are ideal candidates. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative recovery methods and contribute to valuable research.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this meditation intervention is safe for postoperative outcomes?

Research has shown that meditation, particularly with the Headspace app, is safe and easy to use. One study found that mindfulness meditation can reduce stress and anxiety in individuals with gastrointestinal tumors, similar to conditions like pancreatic cancer. Importantly, meditation and mindfulness have no known negative side effects. They offer a gentle method to manage symptoms and support recovery after surgery, making them a promising option for improving recovery without adding risks.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike traditional treatments for pancreatic cancer, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, this trial explores the impact of meditation on postoperative outcomes. Researchers are excited about this approach because meditation could offer a non-invasive way to improve recovery and manage stress, which are significant concerns for patients undergoing major cancer surgeries. The use of the Headspace app for guided mindfulness meditation, combined with activity tracking via Garmin devices, provides a structured method to potentially enhance mental and physical well-being. This innovative approach might show that integrating mindfulness practices into surgical recovery can lead to better overall outcomes, offering a complementary option to existing medical treatments.

What evidence suggests that scheduled meditation might be an effective treatment for postoperative outcomes in pancreatic cancer?

Research has shown that meditation can aid recovery after surgery. Studies have found that mindfulness meditation reduces anxiety and stress in patients with stomach and intestinal tumors, resulting in less pain and shorter hospital stays. In this trial, participants in Arm I will access the Headspace application for meditation before and after surgery, while those in Arm II will receive delayed access. A recent study found that pancreatic cancer patients who practiced meditation felt better emotionally and experienced less pain after surgery. Additionally, using the Headspace app for meditation has been linked to lower stress and improved mood within weeks. Overall, meditation appears promising in helping patients recover more comfortably after surgery.12345
