What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests an online program called Project Independence, which aims to help caregivers of autistic youth ages 10 to 14. The program provides practical tools for caregivers to support their child's independence in daily routines. Participants will either complete Project Independence or watch unrelated educational videos to determine which is more effective. Suitable candidates for the trial are U.S. adults who care for an autistic child in this age range and have internet access. As an unphased trial, this study offers caregivers a unique opportunity to access potentially helpful resources and contribute to research that could benefit many families.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that Project Independence is safe for caregivers of autistic youth?

A previous study tested Project Independence to determine its practicality and acceptability as an online tool for caregivers of autistic youth. The goal was to help these caregivers support greater independence in daily life for the youth. The study found no negative effects from using the online platform, suggesting it is safe and well-tolerated. As an online session, it poses minimal risk of physical harm. Participants found it easy to understand and use, demonstrating its user-friendliness and safety.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Project Independence for autism because it introduces a novel approach by using a single-session online intervention. Unlike traditional therapies, which often require multiple in-person sessions over several weeks or months, this method offers a quick and accessible solution that can be completed in just 30 minutes from home. This immediacy and convenience could potentially lower barriers to treatment, making it easier for more individuals to access support for autism.

What evidence suggests that Project Independence could be effective for supporting independence in autistic youth?

Research shows that Project Independence, which participants in this trial may receive, could help caregivers support autistic youth in becoming more independent in their daily routines. Early studies have found that similar programs can improve the quality of life and skills like planning and organizing for autistic individuals. Research also indicates that participants find these programs practical and well-liked, as they are helpful and easy to use. Although specific data on Project Independence is limited, evidence supports the approach's potential to positively impact daily living skills for autistic youth.16789
