Home Hospitalization for Sudden Illness
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether adults with certain sudden illnesses can safely receive treatment at home instead of in a hospital through a method called Home Hospitalization. The goal is to determine if home treatment can maintain the same quality and safety while being more cost-effective and comfortable for patients. Suitable candidates for this trial are adults living near the hospital with conditions such as heart failure, pneumonia, or diabetes complications, and they require a caregiver for initial assistance. The trial aims to enhance patient experience by providing personalized medical care in the comfort of their home. As an unphased trial, it offers patients the opportunity to contribute to innovative healthcare solutions that could transform future treatment options.
Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial team to get a clear answer.
What prior data suggests that this home hospitalization model is safe?
Research has shown that home hospitalization is safe for patients. Studies have found that patients treated at home experience lower death rates compared to those in traditional hospitals. Less than 1% of patients required transfer to a hospital for more intensive care, and fewer than 7% needed to return for a 24-hour stay.
Home hospitalization also reduces common problems associated with hospitals. Patients at home encounter fewer issues like falls and infections and are less likely to become suddenly confused or disoriented. Overall, evidence suggests that home hospitalization is a safe and effective way to treat patients outside of traditional hospitals.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about home hospitalization because it offers a unique approach compared to traditional hospital stays for suddenly ill adults. Unlike standard care, which typically involves extended stays in a hospital, this method allows patients to return home after initial treatment in the emergency department. At home, they receive specialized, personalized services tailored to their needs, which can lead to increased comfort and potentially faster recovery. This approach not only aims to improve patient satisfaction by keeping them in a familiar environment but also reduces the strain on hospital resources, offering a promising alternative to conventional inpatient care.
What evidence suggests that home hospitalization is effective for acute care?
Research has shown that receiving hospital care at home, the focus of this trial, can be as effective as staying in a hospital. Studies have found that patients treated at home face a much lower risk of dying during their care and make fewer emergency room visits within 30 days after discharge. People often feel more satisfied with home care, which usually costs less. Overall, home hospitalization provides safe, high-quality care, improves patient outcomes, and reduces costs.14567
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults living within a short distance of the hospital who have conditions like heart failure, COPD, asthma, infections, kidney disease, gout flare, or high blood pressure and need hospital-level care. Participants must be able to consent (or have a proxy), and have a caregiver available for at least the first day.Inclusion Criteria

Trial Overview
The study tests whether patients with sudden illnesses can safely receive full hospital-level treatment at home instead of being admitted to the hospital. Care is provided by medical professionals visiting or monitoring remotely.
