DTTC-Connect for Apraxia
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores a new method called Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing - Connect (DTTC-Connect) to assist children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), a condition that hinders clear speech. The treatment aims to enhance their ability to use connected speech, or speaking in phrases, which often poses a challenge. The trial involves children practicing phrase-level speech twice a week for eight weeks. Children diagnosed with CAS, who can repeat 2-3 word phrases, and speak English as their primary language might be suitable candidates for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity for children to potentially benefit from innovative speech therapy techniques.
What prior data suggests that DTTC-Connect is safe for children with CAS?
Research has shown that Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) is a safe and effective treatment for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Studies consistently find that motor-based treatments like DTTC help children with CAS improve their ability to say words. Importantly, no major reports of negative side effects from DTTC have emerged, indicating that children tolerate it well. DTTC-Connect, the treatment under study, builds on the proven DTTC method and aims to help children improve their speech in sentences. Since evidence backs DTTC, it is considered a safe option for treating speech disorders.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about DTTC-Connect for apraxia because it offers a new way to help individuals improve their speech abilities. Unlike traditional speech therapy methods, which often use static cues, DTTC-Connect employs Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing. This unique approach uses a combination of timing and touch to guide speech production, potentially making it more effective for those with apraxia. By incorporating immediate feedback and tactile signals, DTTC-Connect aims to enhance motor learning and speech accuracy more efficiently than existing treatments.
What evidence suggests that DTTC-Connect is effective for childhood apraxia of speech?
Research has shown that Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) helps children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) improve their ability to say words. This treatment teaches children to better control their speech muscles for clearer speech. Although few studies focus specifically on DTTC-Connect, DTTC itself has significantly enhanced children's speech clarity and accuracy. This trial will evaluate DTTC-Connect, which extends the method to aid in speaking phrases and sentences. The structured approach of DTTC-Connect aims to support this development, potentially improving overall communication skills. Participants in this trial will join either an Immediate Treatment Group or a Delayed Treatment Group to assess DTTC-Connect's effectiveness over time.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for children aged 3.5 to almost 13 years old who have been diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech, have normal mouth structure and hearing, use English as their main language, show some ability to speak in short phrases, and are not getting other speech therapy during the study.Inclusion Criteria

Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants receive Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing-Connect (DTTC-Connect) treatment two times per week for 8 weeks
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for speech motor control and communicative participation post-treatment
Delayed Treatment
Participants in the Delayed Treatment Group wait for 8 weeks before starting treatment to control for maturation effects
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

- Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing - Connect (DTTC-Connect)
Trial Overview
The study tests DTTC-Connect, a new version of an established motor-based speech therapy that helps kids with apraxia move from practicing single words to speaking in connected phrases. Children get this treatment twice a week for eight weeks in a randomized controlled trial.

Experimental Treatment
Participants in the Immediate Treatment Group will receive Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing-Connect (DTTC-Connect) Treatment two times per week (45-minute sessions each) for 8 weeks. Total duration will be 90 minutes/week over 16 sessions. Treatment will begin following the diagnostic evaluation.
The Delayed Treatment Group serves as a control during the period in which participants are waiting to begin treatment. A delayed treatment onset is employed to control for maturation effects. Participants in the Delayed Treatment Group will receive Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing-Connect (DTTC-Connect) Treatment two times per week (45-minute sessions each) for 8 weeks. Total duration will be 90 minutes/week over 16 sessions. Treatment will begin after an 8-week delay following the diagnostic evaluation.
