What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new version of a mobile app called uSafeUS+ to determine if it can help college students drink less alcohol and reduce the risk of sexual assault. Researchers aim to assess whether students find the app useful and if it promotes safer drinking behaviors. Participants are divided into three groups: one using the new app, another using the original app, and a control group not using any app. College students who drink at least once a week or often socialize where alcohol is present may be suitable for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to research that could enhance safety and well-being on college campuses.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that the uSafeUS+ app is safe for reducing alcohol consumption and sexual assault risk?

Research has shown that the uSafeUS app, which serves as the foundation for the new uSafeUS+ app, is already in use on many college campuses. It aids in preventing and responding to sexual assaults and other safety issues. Although specific data on the safety of the uSafeUS+ app is not yet available, the original uSafeUS app has been widely used without any reported safety problems.

The uSafeUS+ app introduces new features to address alcohol consumption and related risks. Given the trust in the uSafeUS app on college campuses, it is reasonable to expect that the uSafeUS+ app will also be safe and user-friendly. However, as a mobile app rather than a drug or medical device, traditional safety concerns like side effects do not apply. Instead, safety in this context means the app functions correctly and does not cause harm when used.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the uSafeUS+ app because it integrates alcohol content to specifically address and reduce risky drinking behaviors, which can contribute to sexual assault risk. Unlike current safety apps that mostly focus on general personal safety without addressing alcohol consumption, uSafeUS+ offers tools and information to help users make safer decisions when drinking. This tailored approach not only enhances user awareness but also empowers them with strategies to manage their alcohol intake, potentially reducing both alcohol consumption and related risks.

What evidence suggests that the uSafeUS+ app is effective for reducing alcohol consumption and sexual assault risk?

This trial will compare the effectiveness of the uSafeUS+ app, which includes content on alcohol use, with the current uSafeUS app that lacks alcohol-related content. Research has shown that the uSafeUS+ app, addressing both alcohol use and the risk of sexual assault, enhances the existing uSafeUS app used on many college campuses. The current app provides educational content and tools to help lower the risk of sexual assault. By incorporating features that address alcohol use, uSafeUS+ aims to reduce heavy drinking, often linked to sexual assault incidents.

Previous studies have found that similar apps can help people drink less and improve their self-control. Specifically, the Drink Less app successfully helped users reduce their alcohol consumption. By combining these strategies in uSafeUS+, the app aims to more effectively decrease risky behaviors related to alcohol and sexual assault.12356

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for college students aged 18-25 who live on or near campus, own a smartphone, and regularly drink alcohol or attend social events with alcohol at least once a week. Participants must plan to keep this routine during the two-month study and be willing to give consent.

Trial Overview

The study compares two mobile apps—uSafeUS+ (which targets both drinking and sexual assault risk) and uSafeUS (focused only on sexual assault)—against a group that just completes surveys. The goal is to see if the new app helps reduce risky behaviors over one month.
