What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if a Spanish-language program called SL-Unstuck can enhance executive function skills, such as planning and problem-solving, in Spanish-speaking families with children who have autism or ADHD. The program includes weekly sessions where children and their caregivers learn strategies together. Researchers will compare families who begin the program immediately with those who wait, assessing improvements in managing daily challenges. Families with children aged 8-11 who have autism or ADHD and experience frequent meltdowns or difficulty starting tasks are well-suited for participation. As an unphased trial, this study offers families the chance to contribute to valuable research that could lead to better support strategies for children with autism or ADHD.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on behavioral interventions, so it's likely you can continue your medications, but you should confirm with the trial organizers.

What prior data suggests that the SL-Unstuck intervention is safe for children and caregivers?

Studies have shown that the English version of Unstuck and On Target is effective and well-liked by children with autism and ADHD, helping improve skills like planning and flexibility. The Spanish version, SL-Unstuck, has been tested in various locations. Research indicates that Spanish-speaking caregivers find this version even more acceptable and effective than the English one.

In a trial in Ecuador, the Spanish-language program produced positive results for children with different learning needs. Caregivers observed improvements in their child's ability to plan and adapt. These studies reported no major side effects, suggesting the treatment is well-tolerated.

This treatment does not involve medication and is supported by data showing its safety and effectiveness in different cultural settings, which should reassure potential participants about its safety.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

"Unstuck and On Target" is unique because it focuses on improving executive function skills, which are crucial for managing tasks and behavior, in children with Autism and ADHD. Unlike standard treatments that often rely on medication, this intervention uses a structured program of group sessions for both children and their caregivers, promoting skills like flexibility and goal-setting. Delivered in Spanish, it also broadens accessibility, addressing a gap for Spanish-speaking communities. Researchers are excited about its potential to provide a non-medication-based approach that empowers families and enhances daily functioning.

What evidence suggests that SL-Unstuck is effective for improving executive function in children with autism and ADHD?

Research has shown that the Unstuck and On Target program improves skills like problem-solving and flexibility in children with autism and ADHD. Children who participated in the program demonstrated better classroom behavior and adaptability. In this trial, some participants will immediately receive the Spanish version, SL-Unstuck. Spanish-speaking caregivers found SL-Unstuck very helpful and effective. Additionally, research suggests that the program supports families by providing a shared approach to discussing and managing everyday challenges. These findings indicate that SL-Unstuck can enhance skills and family life for Spanish-speaking participants.13467
