What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new treatment called ST-04, a paste containing alprostadil designed to improve erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). The treatment is applied inside the urethra, where it forms a gel to help achieve an erection. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of different doses of ST-04, both with and without sildenafil. Men diagnosed with ED for more than three months who have not found success with other ED medications might be suitable candidates for this trial. As a Phase 2 trial, this research focuses on assessing the treatment's effectiveness in an initial, smaller group of participants, offering them a chance to contribute to important advancements in ED treatment.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but you cannot participate if you are using anti-androgens, oral or injectable androgens, or nitrates. It's best to discuss your current medications with the trial team.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this treatment is likely to be safe for humans?

Research has shown that alprostadil, the main ingredient in the new ST-04 treatment, is generally safe for treating erectile dysfunction (ED). Studies have found that alprostadil significantly improves ED symptoms compared to a placebo. Most people tolerate it well, with few serious side effects reported.

Some men have experienced mild pain in the penis, but this is usually not a major issue. Only a small number of cases reported prolonged erections, which can be concerning but are rare. These findings are based on both skin application and direct insertion methods of alprostadil, similar to the method used in ST-04.

This trial is in its second phase, which often examines safety and effectiveness in a larger group of people. Since alprostadil is already used in other ED treatments, it offers some reassurance about its safety.12345

Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising for ED?

Unlike the standard treatments for erectile dysfunction, like oral medications such as Viagra or Cialis, ST-04 is a topical paste that directly delivers the active ingredient, Alprostadil, to the site of action. This method could potentially offer faster results and fewer systemic side effects. Furthermore, the dose escalation approach, allowing for the use of ST-04 alone or in combination with Sildenafil, offers flexibility and the possibility of enhanced effectiveness. Researchers are excited about ST-04 because it represents a novel delivery method that could offer a more targeted and efficient treatment option for those with erectile dysfunction.

What evidence suggests that this treatment might be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction?

Research has shown that alprostadil, when applied directly to the skin or into the urethra, can significantly improve erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Studies have found that alprostadil helps men achieve erections both during doctor visits and at home. Tests with alprostadil creams demonstrated noticeable improvements in erectile function after six weeks of use. Clinical trials reported up to 83% effectiveness in men with severe ED using a 300 microgram dose. Alprostadil proves reliable, with many users achieving an erection in a high number of attempts, often within minutes. This trial will explore the effectiveness of ST-04, a new alprostadil paste, in a single-arm dose escalation study. Participants will receive varying doses of ST-04, with or without Sildenafil, to determine its potential in improving erectile function.23678
