What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

The investigators are conducting a pilot open-label pre/post interventional trial in adolescents and adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) and abnormal glucose tolerance or early CF-related diabetes mellitus (CFRD) to assess the safety and efficacy of verapamil on beta cell function and dysglycemia.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for teens and adults with cystic fibrosis who have abnormal blood sugar levels or early-stage diabetes related to CF. Participants should not have other major health issues that would prevent safe participation.

Inclusion Criteria

AGT defined as OGTT 2-hour glucose >140 mg/dL and <200 mg/dL or OGTT 1-hour glucose >200 mg/dL
I have a confirmed genetic diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.
CFRD defined as fasting glucose >126 mg/dL and/or OGTT 2-hour glucose >200 mg/dL

Exclusion Criteria

I need to take certain medications like beta blockers or lithium.
Allergy to any components of the MMTT standardized meal
My liver tests are high or I have severe liver disease.

Interventions

  • Verapamil Hydrochloride

Trial Overview

The study tests whether verapamil, a medication usually used for heart conditions, can help improve insulin-producing cell function and blood sugar control in people with CF-related high blood sugar. All participants receive the drug and are monitored before and after treatment.
