What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new yeast protein supplement to determine if it builds muscle as effectively as whey protein, which is derived from milk. Researchers will evaluate both proteins for their ability to support muscle growth and recovery over a 16-week period. The trial seeks participants who have engaged in resistance training, such as weightlifting, at least once a week for the past three months. Participants should not have conditions that interfere with muscle growth, such as diabetes or heart disease. The goal is to determine if the yeast protein serves as a sustainable and effective alternative to whey protein for muscle building. As a Phase 2 trial, this research measures the effectiveness of the yeast protein in an initial, smaller group, offering participants a chance to contribute to innovative muscle-building solutions.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but you cannot participate if you are taking antibiotics or medications for certain conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

A previous study found yeast protein to be safe and easy to handle when taken daily for six months. Participants reported no serious side effects, suggesting it is a safe option for building muscle. Another study showed that yeast protein improved muscle function and reduced tiredness without causing any issues.

Whey protein, often compared to yeast protein, is widely used and considered safe for most people. Many studies have tested it without major safety concerns.

Overall, both yeast and whey proteins appear well-tolerated. Research supports their safety for increasing muscle mass.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatments?

Unlike the standard of care for maintaining or increasing muscle mass, which typically involves whey protein, yeast protein is unique because it offers a novel source of nutrients. Researchers are excited about yeast protein because it might provide a more sustainable and potentially hypoallergenic alternative to traditional animal-based proteins like whey. Additionally, yeast protein could offer a different amino acid profile, which might enhance muscle synthesis in ways that standard proteins do not. This could open up new dietary options for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or preferences.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for muscle mass?

This trial will compare the effects of yeast protein and whey protein on muscle mass. Research has shown that yeast protein can significantly boost muscle mass and strength. Studies indicate that yeast protein helps the body build muscle and improves muscle function. In one study, participants who took yeast protein and those who took whey protein both experienced similar muscle gains when they exercised. Yeast protein also improved muscle fiber quality and reduced muscle fatigue. These findings suggest that yeast protein serves as a good alternative to whey protein for building muscle.12345

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for healthy adults aged 18-35 who have experience with resistance training. Participants must be able to give consent and follow study instructions. People with certain health conditions (like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer), allergies to the supplements, or those who are pregnant cannot join.

Inclusion Criteria

Participants must have the ability to read, understand, and sign an informed consent and must be willing to comply with study treatment and follow-up
Prior resistance training experience to enable them to reach a large training stimulus relatively quickly and to avoid the longer phase of neuromuscular adaptations
I am between 18 and 35 years old.

Exclusion Criteria

I have a condition that affects my muscle growth, like diabetes or cancer.
I am currently taking antibiotics.
I feel chest pain or discomfort during daily activities or exercise.
