What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a digital mindfulness program to determine its effectiveness for individuals who have recently experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Participants will use the Healthy Minds Program app for four weeks and complete questionnaires. The researchers aim to assess the app's usability, participant satisfaction, and potential benefits for depression. Suitable candidates include those who have had suicidal thoughts in the past month, speak English, own a smartphone, and have regular internet access. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, providing participants the opportunity to experience this innovative approach firsthand.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that the Healthy Minds Program is safe for use in individuals with recent suicidal thoughts or behaviors?

Research has shown that the Healthy Minds Program (HMP) app is generally safe for users. The app provides meditation exercises to enhance mental health. Some studies suggest that using the HMP app can lower stress and anxiety. For example, practicing with the app for just 5 minutes a day can reduce stress by 28% and anxiety by 18%. No reports of serious side effects have emerged from using the app, indicating that most users tolerate it well. Although this trial remains in the early stages, existing research supports the safety of the HMP app.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

The Healthy Minds Program is unique because it focuses on digital mindfulness techniques to tackle depression, offering a fresh approach compared to traditional treatments like antidepressant medications and therapy. This program leverages digital tools to make mindfulness practices more accessible and engaging, potentially reaching individuals who may not seek conventional therapy. Researchers are excited because it could provide a non-invasive, widely accessible option that empowers users to manage their mental health more proactively and flexibly.

What evidence suggests that the Healthy Minds Program might be an effective treatment for depression?

Research has shown that the Healthy Minds Program (HMP), which participants in this trial will use, can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. In one study, college students using the program reported feeling less depressed and anxious, with fewer suicidal thoughts. Another study with teenagers found that the program significantly lowered negative thinking, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, a clinical trial found that activities like meditation and mindful movement in the program reduced anxiety by 30%, similar to the effects of medication. These findings suggest that the HMP app could be a helpful tool for improving mental health.16789
